Hey everyone! Has anyone completed the application yet? If so, do you know approximately how long it will be till we hear back from them?

I heard early June you hear back…and I heard pretty much everyone gets in, the hard part is actually finding research.

I applied just today.

Does everyone who gets accepted to Urop end up with a research project, or are some people shut out?

Some ppl end up dropping cause they can’t find one. You have to interview, etc for it I think.

Yea, in the fall you have to find your own research project by getting in contact with professors. I’m doing UROP next fall as a sophomore. Should be a rewarding experience. Incoming freshman don’t find out until the summer. The earlier you apply the better your chances. UROP is great for people interested in medicine and research oriented professional and graduate schools. Sometimes people don’t like UROP, but overall I have heard very good news about the program. People who get into/do UROP on average have higher GPA’s than people that are not in the program.

D will be a UROP Peer Advisor next year, so if anyone has specific questions, I’ll forward them to her.

I have a question if you don’t mind…

I read on the site that UROP is “reserved for students looking for their first research experience”. I’ve done some high school research projects before, but nothing big with actual professors. Would this significantly hurt my chances, or am I OK?

Going to be a peer advisor for next year. =)

yosup: That shouldn’t hurt your chances. Most people who apply to UROP get in (I don’t know anyone who hasn’t gotten in, to be honest), so don’t worry. In fact having that on your resume could help your chances of getting a good research project since most freshman don’t have any experience coming into UROP. From my understanding, what they mean by that is that they don’t want 3rd year students who have had extensive research experience applying to UROP, taking away the chance from a first or second year student who hasn’t yet had any significant research experience.

Best of luck to you!

@onesong-Hi! I was just wondering how many (approximately) social sciences research projects you think there are…i’m sure they are hard to come by as opposed to the actual sciences!

Hi peacelovejulie! According to the project book, there were 203 projects for the social sciences this past year. It’s not as many as say, the biomedical sciences, but there are quite a bit to choose from. You shouldn’t have too much of a problem finding one of these projects as most students tend to go for the biomedical sciences anyway.

Okay thank you! Is UROP really time consuming or is it pretty easy to manage in your schedule?

It was pretty manageable for me. I took it for 3 credits and worked 9 hours a week. Just make sure you don’t overload yourself with other classes, and you should be fine. =)

Thank you so much for your help! I can’t wait to get to Ann Arbor! :)

Just returned from visiting D at AA. Yosup, as onesong164 said, your previous experience will help you to stand-out among other applicants, especially when you are applying for research projects.

how long should the short-answer questions on the application be? i’m swimming around 250 words for each…but I dont know if they are looking for more/less. can anyone help me??

For those interesting in business, there were a few projects available working with business school professors.

Mine were a lot less…when they give like 5 questions in small boxes, I assumed they didn’t want much…I hope im not wrong…

Are there any law projects available?

I don’t think they are looking for a lot of words based on how they worded their questions.
