Uruguayan Background, any benefits?

I am a first generation student and really want to take advantage of being an URM. I female and have an EFC of 0, but I was wondering if being from Uruguay would increase my chances at all since it is such a small country or if it's exactly the same as any other Hispanic background. Just some info:
ACT Composite: 32
SAT Math: 610
SAT ENG: 680
SAT READ: 600
also would be awesome to get some info on what schools, primarily liberal arts colleges, give preference to URM

Although it’s by no means a guarantee of admission and you still need to be academically qualified, your Uruguayan background would make your application stand out among the large number of Mexican American applicants. It’s not a huge advantage, but it does add a slight (very slight) edge. I also come from a very small Hispanic country & although I’m sure this made my app stand out, it helped me less than I thought it would. Being Hispanic overall is what counts the most. Your ACT is better than your SAT -send that only, unless they ask for the SAT too. A 32 makes you competitive for any school, but keep in mind that this doesn’t assure you admission (your app is more than just test scores). Since you’re of low income, have you considered applying through Questbridge?

Some colleges to consider: http://www.collegesimply.com/guides/32-on-the-act/</a></p>

Thanks and I have but do you know if there is a deadline for applying? My school can’t give me transcripts over the summer.

I think you’re okay for now. If you’re interested in Questbride, the app deadline is on late September. Otherwise, early action/decision deadlines for private schools are in October/November. Regular decision is usually January 1st. State school deadlines vary. What’s your home state?

Utah

Here are the deadlines for your state’s publics:

University of Utah: http://admissions.utah.edu/apply/undergraduate/freshman.php</a> (check out the deadline for the honors college).

Here are the scholarships offered: http://financialaid.utah.edu/scholarships/freshman-general-scholarships.php</a>.

Your ACT places you at the 75% percentile of admits, so you should have a good shot at the President’s Scholarship (worth full tuition and more): http://financialaid.utah.edu/scholarships/search/details.php?id=5983</a>. If for some reason you don’t get that one (it’s competitive, although I imagine it shouldn’t be an issue for you), they have some automatic ones too.

Utah State University: <a href=“Apply to Utah State University | Admissions | USU”>Apply to Utah State University | Admissions | USU. Also has an honors option: Page Not Found | Utah State University;

Scholarships: <a href=“Tuition Costs & Financial Aid | Admissions | USU”>Tuition Costs & Financial Aid | Admissions | USU. Unlike U of Utah, all of Utah State’s scholarships are automatic.

Here’s the stats index: <a href=“Page Not Found | Utah State University”>Page Not Found | Utah State University. Use your GPA + your 32 ACT to see which scholarship you would get. If your GPA is high enough, you could get full tuition.

University of Utah has an acceptance rate above 80%, while Utah State’s is above 95%. Both offer good scholarships for your stats as well as honors options for a student of your caliber. Pay attention to all deadlines (admissions, honors college, scholarships). These are your safeties/back ups/definitely fa’shoo schools.

Now, for your matches and reaches…This is where you aim at your own level or higher. These need to be picked more carefully/thoroughly, so I need some info to help you. Since you have an EFC of $0, you need either schools that meet 100% of need or schools that will give you big merit scholarships. What’s your major (interests, if undecided)? Any preference on location/weather/type of students/etc? You said you preferred LACs…How small of a school do you want?

These are the Questbridge partner colleges: http://www.questbridge.org/partner-colleges/overview-listing</a>.</p>

There’s something people get confused about: All Questbridge schools will meet 100% of your need whether you apply through Questbridge or not. All the Questbridge app does is highlight the obstacles you’ve overcome with extra essays & put you in a separate pile/help you stand out. But these college’s will give you the same financial aid package either way. If you can prepare a thoughtful application with well-crafted essays by September, go for it. If not, it won’t give you the advantage it’s supposed to & will just stress you out, so apply the regular way in this case. Also, there are many colleges that meet 100% of need who aren’t Questbridge partners, so don’t limit yourself to the QB list only.

Unless you are applying as a citizen or resident of Uruguay, I can’t see why it would matter.

@GMTplus7 Somewhere in the forum I’ve read that “not all Hispanics are created equal” as in different nationalities get treated differently in admissions. Not sure how valid that is, but…

Lilliana330, I really love the atmosphere of an LAC. Also I want to be premed, and lacs allow me to do that while also having a major, I would like to international relations and studies. My main goal is to study medicine through activism and advocacy.

@uruchica Every college will require you to pick a major while still being premed, and most should allow you to do this with a non-science major. You just need to take the required pre-med courses along those needed for your major. Your goal is doable at any decent school, large or small. However, if you prefer the atmosphere of a LAC, that’s another thing. Do you have a preferred location? Setting?
