US Based D considering CDN Universities

My D is considering 5 CDN universities. Assuming acceptance, she will be a business major, can you tell me how they compare with each other. The stats are obvious, size, location, etc. But what about the nuances that seem to tougher to get at. I assume that she’ll want to return to the US for grad school, so does it make a difference which U she would attend from a “grad school reputation” perspective. The four schools are:

Toronto

McGill

Queens

Western

Concordia

Any insight would be appreciated.

When it concerns business majors:

Queens

Western

Toronto

McGill

Concordia

When it comes to overall quality of school. (Reputation):

Western

McGill

Toronto

Queens

Concordia

Hardest to get into:

Queens

Western

McGill

Toronto

Concordia

Ease of getting into and variety of course selection:

Western

Concordia

McGill

Toronto

Queens

Class size (Largest to lowest):

Toronto

Western

McGill

Queens

Concordia

you'd alsowant to add the University of British Columbia, here in Vancouver, BC, if your daughter wants to major in business or commerce. UBC's Sauder School of Business is VERY prestigious worldwide (plus relatively harder to get in)

In terms of international prestige, University of Toronto and Mcgill should definitely be at the top of the list. The only downside for Toronto is that it's a commuter school, and it's not famed for its quality of undergrad education. I'd recommend Mcgill because it's a very "college-y" place (Montreal) with rich culture and lots to on and around campus.

If you want to spend your next four years in one of the world's most beautiful cities (Vancouver), UBC would be your best choice. Plus Vancouver is a very diverse, multicultural city.

I have to agree with Jimmy - take a look at UBC. Vancouver is a great city to be in as an undergrad (especially with the upcoming 2010 winter olympics).

Back to your post...
Toronto, McGill, and UBC are consistently ranked as the overall top schools in Canada in world rankings.

From what I can tell, undergrad business programs in Canada do not really differ significantly in quality of education (the difference is less signficant than different tier US schools, for example). There are some schools that get a lot of hype in Canada, such as Queen's, York, and Western, and others that have an amazing international reputation (U of T, McGill, and UBC). Either way, if your daughter does well, it won't be hard to transition back to the US.

What you need to do is narrow down your list in terms of fit - what do you want from the school? Faculty websites can tell you a lot - is there a core curriculum? Do you get to take electives? What business fields are offered (accounting, banking, international business, etc)? Is there a good co-op option if you want that? Do they have internship opportunities? What about scholarships? Email some profs or advisors, and try to visit some schools if at all possible.

Good luck :)

Yeah, I think those rankings are pretty accurate, except for the overall quality/recognition ranking I would put like this:

Toronto/McGill

Queens/Western

Concordia

Western would certainly not be at the top for Canada, although its business program is apparently well respected.

Western is not well know in the US compared to U of T and McGill. Definatley U of T or McGill. I like U of T better just b/c of Toronto, Montreal's great but T has a more big city feel.

I think UofT, McGill, and UBC are the most internationally reputed of all Canadian universities.

I'm in first-year at UBC and I like it. It's a great school with a lot to offer and has a good reputation worldwide. However, I wouldn't go as far as to say that the Sauder School of Business is very prestigious. It often seems like UBC makes Sauder to be better than it really is. In any case though, Sauder is not bad and there are certainly intelligent people in the program.

As I am an Arts student, I am considering a transfer to McGill next year. True, Toronto is a bigger city, but I think I'd much prefer the collegiate and rich cultural feel of Montreal.
