<p>You may not owe any tax. There is a basic exemption amount which is about $90K these days, and that does not include your husband’s earnings, plus you can claim for some living expenses exemptions. </p>
<p>Whether you or your DH is a citizen isn’t going to matter in terms of money in most cases. If you make more than those exemption amounts, yourDD isn’ t going to get any federal money other than $5500 in student loans that she can get even if you don’t file FAFSA. As to what she can get from the schools, you can run your numbers through the NPC on the school’s sites. </p>
<p>UCLA is not a school where she has much chance of getting money. But there may be places where merit money is a good possibility. </p>
<p>My SIL is Swiss, and as high as the COL is in her hometown, she is paying it all here in the US in the Silicon Valley. Lots of high cost places here as well, and paying for college here can be very expensive. She went through the Swiss system at very little cost and then came to the US for advanced degrees, all paid for through fellowships. My niece and nephew are racking up tution costs right now at private schools in the US. People have their prioirites and put their money, on this board the focus is money for educaton, at different levels.</p>
