Ok, so talking about politics is inappropiate for the cadets, but talking about alcohol and other substances that are illegal for those under 21 to consume is alright. Be right back, I need to check and see if the sky is blue.

In case you're curious: http://www.sciencemadesimple.com/sky_blue.html

This just isn't quite going the way you'd hoped, is it? :D

Thats why they call this the "parent's thread" :)

As Ronald Reagan once wrote: "Insanity is contagious--you get it from your kids"

Speaking of children:

"Familiarity breeds contempt - and children." Mark Twain

"The reason grandparents and grandchildren get along so well is that they have a common enemy." Sam Levenson

"I have found the best way to give advice to your children is to find out what they want and then advise them to do it." Harry S Truman

And to answer your question Rationalwar, many of us have learned by experience that the cadets and mids are best served by this forum if we avoid the inevitable rancor of political debate. You'd have to be on the wrong side of the normal distribution curve for intelligence not to come to that conclusion sooner rather than later. So again, why not try your post on the Parents Caf

You do realize that a normal curve has TWO wrong sides, yes? ;)

Oh, and speaking of clever quotes, one of my favorite bumper stickers is, "If I had known grandchildren were going to be this much fun, I'd have had them first!" :D

"You do realize that a normal curve has TWO wrong sides, yes?"

Yup, the "left" and the "right"--
which is why I like the middle :)

LOL. Touche!

As in "Do not touche the furniture" (seen all over the castles of Europe). :D

McCain's age, demeanor work against candidacy
His movements, history of health problems cause concerns
Ralph Vartabedian, Los Angeles Times

Friday, May 18, 2007

(05-18) 04:00 PDT Washington -- As he walked down the stairs of his "Straight Talk Express" campaign bus on a chilly March day in Iowa, Sen. John McCain carefully took one step at a time, his left hand gripping a rail and his right knee looking stiff.

A bum knee isn't surprising in a 70-year-old man -- particularly one whose right leg was shattered about four decades ago when his jet fighter was shot down over North Vietnam.

But his wooden movements, along with his age and appearance, are creating an impression about McCain's health that could be a liability for the Arizona Republican as he tries to persuade Americans to elect him president.

McCain brings to the campaign a body and mind with some heavy wear and tear, including a couple of bouts of cancer and the effects of years of torture in a Hanoi prison. If elected, he would be the oldest person in history to enter the White House, and if he served two terms he would leave office an octogenarian.

Other presidential contenders have health issues, including Delaware Democratic Sen. Joseph Biden's two brain aneurysms in 1988, Rudy Giuliani's 2000 prostate cancer and former Sen. Fred Thompson's lymphoma. But they are all younger and haven't experienced McCain's unique physical and mental agonies.

Voters should not worry, the senator's staff says. He passed a recent health exam with flying colors, they say, the results of which will be released in coming weeks.

Indeed, when life spans are lengthening and people in their 80s are running companies and marathons, McCain's age in itself shouldn't be an issue, some experts say.

"Don't give me that age business," said Dr. James Birren, a prolific medical author known as the father of gerontology who still lectures at the University of Southern California at age 89. "If the task requires speed, then you want the younger person. But if it requires wisdom, you want somebody old."

I heard McCain loves Pan-Galactic Gargle Blasters.

Geez, everytime I'm gone for a few days, something goofy happens over here.

Whatever a pangalactic garlic thing is, I don't think I want one. Maybe I need one, though.

rationalwar, many of the regular posters on this board enjoy a good political discussion. However, we don't have them here. It's a place to discuss college admissions or to brag incessantly about our kids. Please stick around to discuss service academy life, admissions, or your kids. The political discussions and articles can be posted on many, many other boards available for just that purpose - including the Parents Cafe here on college confidential.

WPSON2010; I used to be a huge Dr Who fan but haven't watched it for years, in fact I didn't even know that it was still being made. Where did you go to rent the current season?

Fred56, I don't have the current season, but have last years (2005-2006) and I got it from my local public library. They've got a great system; I go on line, choose which movies I want, order them, and they tell me when they've arrived via my on-line account. I can have fifteen movies out, and fifteen on reserve and waiting to be picked up, at any time. They share movies with something like twelve other libraries in the area and have something like 43,000 dvds.

If your public library doesn't carry the Dr. Who sevies I would think you could also get it from one of the commercial movie dvd companies like Netflick.

WPSON2010; I just went online with to local library's website and there they are by God! Thanks for the tip. I haven't seen the show in ten years and I'll have to check out the new ones.

Not to change the subject (or maybe to continue changing the subject) My son at the USMMA sent me some really cool pictures of Heavy Lift Ships. This is on powerpoint and takes a while to download but neat to see if you like really big machines.

Hopefully this link works:

You're right. We don't have GOOD political discussions here. :D

Well, back I go to doing research on a new camcorder....

I enjoy a bit of amaretto with my evening pipe. If out, I move on to the kahlua and milk. Those are my refreshments of choice while out in the backyard imaging galaxies with my telescope and ccd camera. Very relaxing. In fact, I'm out back right now watching a California sunset and listening to my Telescope's drive humming ever so quietly....patiently waiting for the stars to appear and the imaging session to begin....ahhhhhhhhhhh.......

Get one with a microphone jack and a hot shoe...worth the extra money.

I just bought one that records on disk as a backup recorder. It is so small--and it takes good quality pictures also--that we now use it as a primary. Plus it makes it a lot easier to send short videos to the relatives. Won't go back to tape again.

Yeah, I'm definitely going to HDD this time. Makes editing far easier and less time-consuming.

you guys are pathetic!

If you don't want to read a political thread then don't. NO ONE IS FORCING YOU TO CLICK ON IT.

MODERATORS! Hello anyone there? They police this ****.

It's not taking up space on your computers, stop crying about this, jeesus
