I totally think that Wash U and Northwestern are peer schools...my simply point is that the Brown hate and the Northwestern hype was annoying and false. I seriously doubt that Northwestern is more internationally prestigious than Brown, and even if it was thats pretty irrelevant. I mean after HYPSM most internationals don't know much. All that really matters is National prestige in that regard and Brown does win.

People are jealous of us and our little celebration party and I guess that's a good thing. ;)

FYI: U.S. News Rankings Through the Years

I came from Hong Kong and the educated crowd there definitely know Northwestern because one of their universities has a joint-EMBA program with Kellogg and it's been ranked #1 IN THE WORLD. People feel honored that one of their schools is part of such program. Kellogg-HKUST EMBA

Bescraze, read the posts again. No one says that NU is more well-known than Brown. Because that's, of course, not true. I wish NU was more internationally prestigious though.

Wash U has not quite caught up to NU in terms of reputation. US News Peer Assessment is lower and High School Counselor rank is 20th vs 9th for NU. Granted Wash U has been selling itself very well and someday may come closer to NU's reputation. Their merit aid program has really notched up the quality of their students but I think their grad programs are overall behind NU's (exception in medicine) and here is where I think NU will continue to distinguish itself.

S2530S2,

No, I don't currently live in St louis. But I did live there for a few years. But I also lived in Chicago as well. I do agree Northwestern is considered a more prestigious school. You forget that washu has a great undergrad businees school. Dont get me wrong, they are both fantastic schools. i actually applied to both of them and was fortunately accepted.

To be fair, NU can learn from WashU in providing a more warm-fuzzy feeling. While NU has great academic programs across many different fields, it hasn't been as aggressive as WashU in improving the quality of life--better dorms and dorm food. When I asked for transcripts from WashU, NU, and Stanford, WashU was the only one that emailed me a receipt notice and I got my transcript from there much more quickly than from the other two. They really do well in little details like this. But then maybe it's just easier said than done to do well in both areas (e.g. their engineering program has been going through some sort of crisis).

^ You mean NU's engineering program? Wow. Now I'm curious about what crisis they're going through.

No, WashU's. It was pretty bad. I think they fired the dean earlier this year or last year. I remember a CC member said he/she knew someone who had a hard time to find enough courses to graduate on time. Imagine that.

ooo that makes sense. I was about to say that I thought NU's engineering program was doing pretty well =]

Our engineering program is first-rate with a unique first-year curriculum :)

Nice to see Bescraze pontificating his/her view of colleges here as well – lol!

What a rediculous asssertionl. Trust me no one actually considers Northwestern to be better than Brown. its a great school, but rankings don't tell all. I do agree that is deserves to be top 15 with Wash U, but that doesn't mean your all of a sudden "better" than Brown. I would say you and Wash U are peers of Cornell.

Really? No one?

And academics certainly think that NU is better than Brown (NU has many more highly ranked depts.. than Brown).

Remember, there is lay person “prestige” (which differs from region to region) and academic prestige.

And yeah, I grew up on the EC and it is a safe bet to say that most people would think Brown is better than NU due to it being an Ivy, but saying “no one” is quite a bit of an exaggeration.

Northwestern is not as selective as Brown, its students aren't as strong, its not as prestigious

So I guess the College of the Ozarks and Cooper Union are better schools than Brown since they are more selective.

As already pointed out, the scores of the student bodies are very similar (and NU is a bit stronger in the ACT score dept.). Plus, NU is a significantly BIGGER school. If NU cut its class size down to that of Brown, the admit rate would be much lower.

And as already pointed out, academics seems to think that NU is more prestigious.

A friend of mine chose Northwestern over Duke recently for financial reasons and people thought he was insane.

Funny, I chose NU over Duke (and others) – clearly, I must be insane (btw, NU has significantly more highly ranked depts. in the major areas of study than Duke).

It shouldn't be tied with Washu.
[/quote]

And why? WUSTL falls WAY behind NU in terms of top programs.

Really - they are all fine schools and one can find arguments in favor of one over another w/ regard to something as superfluous as "prestige".
