when i look at other prestigous universities like the ivys and public ivys I always see BU along with them. However, why is it ranked 60th nationwide?? I thought it would be higher??

large institution = high acceptance rate.....low alumini giving rate....lower grad/ retention rate b/c of its size....really if BU wasnt as big..itd b much higher....but i guess you could make the argument for schools like Berkley/ UMich/ UNC........but obviously those are publicly funded while BU is private..i dunno...its an interesting issue

I KNOW! i was so furious but i talked to other college students (at other schools) and they told me this: the only reason why Boston University isn't listed as a "tier 1 school" is b/c it refuses to pay the publication (US News and Report) money to put it in that bracket b/c it doesn't believe in the accuracy of its rating.

the more accurate ranking comes from the Times Higher Education Supplement, which ranks Boston University as the 24th best university in north america. it's smack in between northwestern & NYU (so that gives u an accurate idea of where BU stands). the only UCs above it are berkeley, LA & ucsd. UCI isn't even on the list and santa barbara is way down. the times higher education supplement is an internationally accredited ranking system that's more accurate than the US News & WOrld Report b/c the US News one takes into consideration stupid things like $$, student satisfaction, average GPA (and doesn't take into account the fact that many schools have grade inflation i.e. Harvard).

that's a direct quote from an e-mail i got from some friends. i was kind of angry too b/c my dad kept on telling me to go to UCI b/c it's ranked higher than BU on the US News and World Report which i know is SOO FALSE!

oh and other schools like Stanford even sent a letter to the publication to complain about its ranking

I do not think that the lack of payment to USNews by BU is reasonable explanation for low rating. Rumors from other students are not solid facts.

The fact is that any college/University is ready to give an arm and a leg to get higher ratings. BU, including.
USNews has an equation to determine a college's ranking. Some colleges, like Reed College in Oregon, refuse to give statistics to USNews, if they do not care about the ranking. However, BU supplies numbers to USNews (it means BU wants to be ranked)- USNews calculates the rank. Simple. No payoff is required.

DIfferent publications use different formulas to determine the rankings. You can choose anything you like, even create your own formula. It will not make BU better University.

I heard BU hasnt supplied statistics to US News in a few years and they're still using old ones, and comparing them to everyone else's new ones.

a lot of school counselors dont believe in US News and Report;s school ranking. but personally.. i dont know..

I find it very hard to accept that US News and World rankings are the end all, be all of a school's quality. BU is a good school that should be judged by everyone by their own standards, not a ranking that is questioned by many people in the know.

All that I have to say is that, regardless of ranking, most kids are pretty damn smart here at BU. US News & World ranks BU right next to Ohio State... now Ohio State has a great honors program.... so that wouldn't have surprised me too much. But I've attended classes at the regular OSU and it just doesn't compare to BU, so I honestly find it laughable that BU is all the way down there. I also went to school at UW-Madison (ranked 30 spots above BU) before I transferred here to BU, and the class difficulty is about equal, though the BU students just seem more intelligent.

As everyone also says, the administration I think kind of gives the school a bad rep, but when you take into account the classes, professors, students, and work, (basically everything besides the administration) BU is truly amazing and most anyone in the job world or elsewhere will tell you that in no way, shape, or form does it belong next to OSU. I remember seeing that when I went to UW-Madison, knowing nothing of BU, yet seeing it right next to OSU and thinking to myself, well, won't exactly put my heart and soul into this ranking system.

Why would Ohio State be ranked that high? They really don't seem that great at all.

yup, that's my point

Colleges have to pay a ranking fee in order to make first tier, BU refuses to pay the fee--they can't move up because of that.

the ranking fee sounds mighty, mighty sketchy there, skinnyfists...can you provide any factual information regarding this? Or is this just something "you heard"?

I haven't heard that directly from BU or US News---yet I have seen it mentioned on several credible sites and it does make sense considering it's stats in the magazine are much higher than those around it and it is considerably higher in other rankings. US News has stated they punish Reed College for not paying/providing data....seems the same to me.

okay then....so how about a link or two to these other credible sites? I find it very, very difficult to believe that US News would be so bold as to practice rankings extortion. LOL.

hahah ranking extortion that's funny. but yea i really would like to know where BU stands. also do any of you know of a particular list that classes the best communications programs? or advertising/ journalism? we are such a better school than Ohios state, that is just ridiculous!

I myself, being someone whos going to BU for sure and lives in ohio, can say that BU is much higher than OSU, however the OSU honors program is quite exceptional...the average act now at osu is 27, while the average SAT is about 1230...now obviously that is much lower than BU's which is around 29/ 1330 respectively, but i wouldnt necessarily shoot down Ohio state as much as most of you are...OSU, In my opinion, deserves its ranking, BU's should just be higher

I know that the COM programs are consistently in the top 10, with PR always landing in the number 1 spot. It it supposedly the program most school's model theirs after, as it was the first and is now the best.

so where do you see these rankings that you can say that the COM programs are in the top 10? Can you produce a link (or some other independent evidence) to these rankings? Otherwise your statement carries no weight. Kinda like the guy who claims that BU suffers an overall low ranking because it refuses to pay the US News. If you can't back these statements up, don't just throw them out there because "thats what you heard" or "thats what YOU think". Just makes you look foolish if you've got nothing to support your assertion...

I'm a Dean's Host for COM, and that is the information they supply us with to give to prospective students and parents. I'm sure the dean of the school would not provide us with false information to pass out.
