US News is biased in favor of private schools. When they rank departments, Berkeley is in the top 5 in every category, but they drop to 21 in the overall ranking. US News puts way too much weight on endowment, which is why USC miraculously powered their way to 26 and public schools will never crack the top 20.
If you look at any other ranking, UCLA and Berkeley are ranked much higher and USC isn’t even mentioned.

Why is that funny? Assuming they have a similar peer assessment (they had the same last year), then UCSB beat out Irvine in the objective-based categories.

its funny because everyone “knows” that uci is supposed to be the fourth best UC after cal, la, and sd. at least thats how i see it, and i dont think i will ever see the rankings differently.

Who is “everyone”? I’m just curious to know why you think UCI is better than the other two?

haha. I still hold the image that all the asians that didn’t get into UCLA go to UCI… but yea. weird how UCSB is above UCI… UCI people by default are supposed to be smart. UCSB is crazy party status…

A lot of people seem to refuse to believe that party schools can also be strong academically. But I don’t think that’s true. Maybe I can even argue that instead of driving home on the weekends like in Irvine, Santa Barbara students use that time to party, and during the week they’re both studying hard. Look at the stats:

The schools are basically identical in many categories (Graduation rate, National academy of Sciences membership, etc). Last year, both schools had the same USNWR ranking, and both had the same peer assessment score, so that means both tied among the objective statistics USNWR uses. The only difference UCSB has an incredible social atmosphere and few commuters.

i didn’t deny that its better or anything, i just thought it was funny that someone in this world ranks UCSB higher than UCI. i dono, maybe its ok for ucsb to not have a med school, no business school, and no law school and still get ranked higher. im not denying the rankings or anything, just saying…

jesus christ stop defending ucsb so hard. and it seems you are the odd one out here…everyone has been confirming what i said. dont know why, but i will never place ucsb or davis above uci.

i don’t think anyone in real life actually ranks ucsb above uci, not even sb students i know rank ucsb above uci. sometimes cc seems like it’s filled with phantoms

What do graduate programs have to do with the undergraduate rankings ? And I’m a UCSB student and have always ranked it higher. It’s virtually the same academically except with a much better social atmosphere.

Haha calm down there buddy, I was simply asking you a question (which you answered with anecdotal evidence). I’m not defending it any harder than you’re trying to say that it should be ranked lower
