US News

Is it true that Reed used to be in US News' top ten, before they started factoring in selectivity and Reed stopped cooperating?

I had that notion too at the back of my mind and as far as I remember, I have heard and read about it- "Legend has it..." stuffs.
My guess: Top ten, definitely!! :D
Top five, maybe.
But the hell with all the undeserving colleges who rank above Reed, Reed rules, at least till DEC 15. :D
Let me state a parallel:
It is like someone who is intellectually inferior to you getting higher SAT scores!!!

Cheers!

few years ago Reed used o have acceptance rate of 70% so thats the reason maybe.

I'm at reed right now. All questions welcome.

Hows the weather up there?
Seriously.

nowadays It rains everyday. and I mean every single day. and its also real cold.

I don't actually go to Reed, I go to Oberlin, but I'm from Portland and took two classes at Reed last year.

Reed refuses to provide data to US News, and as a result is ranked lower than it would probably be otherwise. Reed hasn't submitted the data for the past ten years because it believes that the US News formula is not an adequate one to evaluate colleges. Check out this article written recently by Reed's president, Colin Diver in The Atlantic:

http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/200511/shunning-college-rankings

The weather in Portland is mild and rainly. It rains 8 months of the year. But it usually doesn't rain very hard. More of a constant drizzle. It gets down below freezing from December to February, but only snows a couple inches a year, if that.

Is nicer than most places. It may be raining but temp in 45-55. It is the dampness that makes is feel cold. Cold in PDX is <40. No hurricanes, tornados, earthquakes, no major snows.

Are you planning on Reed because of its academics or because of the weather?

Damn! I hate rain!
Nice to hear there are no natural disasters prevailent.
I would want to know about the weather in my ED1 COLLEGE wont I?

i thnk if it fills the US news survey, Reed will definitely be in the top 5 with Williams, Amherst, Swarthmore, Bowdoin etc. In fact according to the princeton review ranking, Reed is no 1 in US for Best Overall Academic Experience for Undergraduates and Their Students Never Stop Studying rankings! Therefore its safe to say that Reed is definitely one of the very best colleges in US!!

That Princeton Review stuff changes each year. It's based on limited student surveys. Last year, UChicago was #1, and this year it's not even in the top 10. I'm not saying Reed isn't a good school, but I don't think you can use Princeton Review to back that up.

ahhrrr, how did the classes at Reed compare to your classes at Oberlin?

I hate rain,too.
Yeah,Princeton Review sounds interesting not to list Chicago as top 20 this year.

ecape, it's hard to compare. But classes at both have been pretty great. Small, too.

Reed fills out the Common Data Set that USNEWS uses for its data. It's posted on Reed's website.
