Can a kid who has a green card and is legally here in this country take out a student loan?

US citizens, legal permanent residents (green card status) and individuals in a limited number of other immigration categories (primarily refugees) are able to file the FAFSA which qualifies them to borrow money through the federal student loan programs.

Thanks Happymomof1. Thats great news!!! I figured that was the case but I wasn’t sure. That will make one young lady very happy:)

However, if the kid’s parent do not have SSN (i.e. no green card); her FAFSA could become complicated

If the parents do not have a SSN, they will need to put 000 00 0000 in the line for SSN. They will not be able to sign the FAFSA electronically, and will need to print out the signature page, sign it, and mail it in.

Just called the mom. She does have a green card. She is trying to become an American citizen, she is just having problems attending classes and paying for them. She works six days a week as a house cleaner, so its tough. It leaves her very little time to study for the tests, take the class and raise a teen daughter.

BTW Thanks to everyone for their input:)
