US Senate Page Program

I just called my senator's DC office. His secretary had no idea about what I was talking about. He told me to check the Senate page website but the website says to check your senator's office. Anyway I am thinking about applying to both the Senate page summer session in 2012 and the House summer page program in 2012. Can anyone explain the process to me? I know I have to call my representative and senator. But what happens after that?

Consider calling their state office instead.

Each office’s procedures differ. You’ll have to see what they require (transcript, resume, test scores, application, etc. are usually wanted, maybe recommendations, too). Also, I don’t know if the offices are ready for the 2012 applications yet–some are extremely slow at knowing their eligibility for the session. I suggest you read [this thread](http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/summer-programs/843882-us-house-rep-page-program.html) for some more information.

I just finished my semester as a page, and can offer some advice and tips as to the selectivity of the program, however, you probably won’t like it. Judging by the initiative you have all taken to check up on the program online, you are willing to work hard for the spot, which is good. About half the kids in my class of pages were legitimate applicants, willing to work for spots. However, the rest were either well connected, or patronage pages, offered to those who had assisted with, donated to, or been close friends with a senator.

If you are applying to be a semester page:
As if being a SENATE page wasn’t prestigious enough, being a semester page pretty much tops it off. Applicants should be civic minded, and are required to have at least a 3.0 GPA. You MUST BE A RISING JUNIOR TO BE SELECTED. Only juniors in high school are allowed. Semester pages live in the dorm with the other pages, and it is an excellent experience.

You are more likely to be given a seat if you’re appointing senator is senior. Those senators who typically get a page every time they ask for include, but are not limited to: Leahy (VT), Lugar (IN), Kerry (MA), Baucus (MT), Snowe (ME), Collins (ME), McConnell (KY), Reid (NV), Akaka (HI), Kyl (AZ) and others.

Californians and South Carolinians: Your senators have not appointed a semester page in the last 5 years, so don’t get your hopes up unless you apply through a senator from another state.

If you have any specific questions about applications or the program in general, I would be happy to answer them. Bottom line, it’s the best experience ever if you’re willing to work hard and be open minded. Combine this with good grades and some SAT scores, and you’re a shoe in for most colleges you could desire, including Ivies.

Remember, It IS HIGHLY SELECTIVE. Only 30 kids per semester and 54 over the summer. I recommend contacting your senator’s office early, and work hard on your app. This is one application you don’t want to put off until last minute. Use any connections you have, but don’t underestimate the power of an honest, hard-working applicant. If you impress them, you will have no troubles. It is a massive game of chance. Sometimes, people aren’t picked because they need a boy for a boys dorm room versus a girl. Don’t get upset if you aren’t chosen, and apply for the House side. They aren’t as highly regarded, but it still looks good.

As a former house page, you might as well apply to both. Donovan95 is right on that some senators always get pages. The house is slightly different because there are more members and only around 70 pages. However, the speaker can appoint several pages and they do not have to be from his district. I had a great time as a page, helped me substantially with college apps. In fact i wrote my college essay on it. Also it would be good to intern at your senator or rep’s office to at least put your name on the radar screen.

What are they looking for in a Page? What will set me apart from tons of other applicants? I’ve been in law and politics type ECs forever: Debate Club, Model United Nations, Youth State Legislature, Mock Trial. I’m involved in many service clubs at school and volunteer regularly with Habitat for Humanity and at my local food bank. My GPA unweighted is a 4.0 and a 4.6 weighted. I’m not sure what the tone of my letter of inquiry is supposed to me, I want to sound earnest and deserving…but I’m not sure what their looking for.

I am still rather young to be considering this program, but would love to participate when i am a junior in two years. On the other hand, my chances are extremely slim, as I live in California. My family does have some connections to Harry Reid, but living in California, I don’t think this will do me much good. I also heard the house program may be brought back, but this could just be a rumor. I would love any information on application or how to increase my chances.

I am currently applying for the 2012-2013 Fall semester to become a Senate page, however I recieved a letter saying my “does not have the seniority in the Senate to appoint a page at this time”. Do I apply to another Senator? And can I apply to any Senator, or a Senator close to my state? Thank you in advance!

The House program will not be brought back. Nerd, you’re sunk. I think the residency requirements vary, from state to state. I’m sure there are some senators who don’t require you be from their state, but preference will always be given to those who live in the state. By now, most of the senators will have posted on their websites whether or not they can sponsor a page; you can check all 100 websites for the requirements, I guess.

Also, is there any one from New Jersey applying this year?

Are there any programs similar to this one? I found out about this after it was too late. Please pm me.

This has probably been discussed before, but I am on a time crunch and can’t read all of the other posts.

I am a junior in HS in NJ. I want to apply for the summer program. What are my chances? In terms of my senators (S. Bob Menendez and S. Frank Lautenberg) actually receiving a page for the summer. Should I apply out of state?

P.S. I meet all the requirements.

Hi! I am a freshman, but I want to do the summer session before my junior year. What kind of things should I do? My ECs are Mock Trial, Science Olympiad, French Scrabble, Golf, and I play in my school band. My GPA is a 4.125 as of right now. Is there anythings else I should consider to increase my chances.
