So I like to play basketball... I think I'm pretty decent. I'm not going to play in the NBA or any other professional league, but I'd like to think that my organized basketball career will last further than high school.

Since my country (Taiwan) does not do much recruiting or scouting whatsoever to the United States, how could I play for the school team? I've heard of walk-ons, but apparently its difficult.

Any information to share? Thanks!

It depends on the team. You may not be able to spontaneously join a Div I team, but if you don’t want to make basketball the focus of your college career, you may not want to play on a big Div I team anyway. If you do want to play at that level, I suggest you contact the coaches ahead of time (preferably > 1 year ahead of time, while they are still recruiting).

Less competitive teams are easier to join. My own college plays Div III and our coaches don’t even recruit - everybody is a walk-on. Our sport teams are mainly recreational: they practice ~10 hours a week, have a match once a week, and don’t care much about their sport for the rest of the time. (In contrast, Div I basketball players are said to devote an average of 40 hours per week to their sport!)

P.S. Div I schools often have competitive “clubs” besides the official teams that play at a more recreational level. Maybe that would be an option for you?

Yeah I probably wouldn’t even consider playing on the school team if I got into a Division I school… like Duke? I can’t even imagine playing in Kyrie Irving’s shoes - or next to his in that regard.

Anyway, the more probable solution would be trying to get on the roster for a Division III team… But in the situation, as you said, that I want to contact a coach, would this be before or after I get accepted?

Haven’t taken official measurements, but i’m around 5’11/6’ and about 170lbs. I would play point guard, but since I live in Asia and people aren’t that tall, I’ve actually had experience at all positions! :)
