Is the American Chemical Society exam same as USA CHem exam?

Well the ACS runs USNCO, so I'd think so.

I found out I'm taking it on the 23rd.

How can you register for the 2007 Chem Olympiad if your school doesn't hold it? (Post #20) I really want to take it as a sophomore next year but hope the deadline hasn't passed!

To answer your question, Cooljoe. It all depends on how the local committe does it. Registeration varies alot. I know some allow more than two students per school to take it. But talk to your chemistry teacher-particularly the AP one. He or she usually received info regarding the exam and gets to choose and select the students to represent the school for the exam.

You took chem as a freshman joe?

Oh, quizquick, I'm taking chem as a correspondence course this summer (freshman year), meaning that I'm doing it mostly self-study with the aid of a teacher at a local university via e-mail.

^ ah, ok. You're still pretty advanced :) Good luck next year!

Thanks, quizquick.

Does anyone know the deadline for registering? What are some materials I can use to prepare if I am selected?

bump.....................

I took the USNCO two days ago. :)

On a sidenote just as a precaution, please don't talk about the exam untill after the 24th.

now its the 24th.
i took the test on the 22nd as well... now its time to wait for the results.

Estimations for cutoff?

Wait, nvm, hehe. We can't discuss until a few more days.

can we talk now????

yeah, it should be fine now. sooooooo, guys, how was it?
I am going to say that was the hardest free response I have ever taken. Multiple choice wasn't that much easier. And I also found several ways to bomb the lab. My chair was also really uncomfortable and made my behind hurt, especially during the free response questions. So I guess it suffices to say it was a wonderful experience.

What did you all use for your procedure on the mustard lab?

I did titration with the NaOH, used phenolphthalein as indicator, ran two trials, came up with 1.5%, but apparently true value was around 2%...

Darn I put 3%. I also did a titration, but I couldnt figure out what to do after I mixed NaOH and acetic acid in the mustard!

Aww, that's okay! As long as you can support your conclusion with the correct calculations with your observed data, you shouldn't get points off (from what I have heard).
