USABO 2010 - Discuss

Also, from last years semis, how do u tell the difference between northern blot and southern blot?

which were overrepresented?

A northern blot tests for RNA while a southern blot tests for DNA, I believe?

@mjin: you were given intron/exon sites, so you can calculate the lengths yourself, and look at the ladder given to see if the gel has mrna or dna

I don’t wanna do any cracking stuff for the 2010 open, it seems kinda illegal.

I have a hard copy of the 2010 open that my teacher gave me…

^can u scan it?

just took the semis.
it was fun-- much more legit than the open exam.
some problems were completely esoteric, of course, but the rest was OK.

those who have already taken it, what do you think the cutoff will be?
it was a little easier than I expected— 120 perhaps?

umm. i dont have a scanner but i can post a problem a day on this forum with exact wording and answers if yall like.

uno mas about semi probs! umm was there many probs regarding specific classes or orders such as if they gave u a discription of a flatworm and u had to tell them that it was a Platyhelminthes or something?

Does anyone have any copies of the past semifinal exams? My teacher doesn’t have any, I’ve tried looking all over the web and can’t find a single one. I’d be willing to trade for past open exams/SATs/etc.

@ Messiah: Can you email me the 2010 pdf? Let me take a shot at it…

^ Shouldn’t you have already taken the Open…

DO NOT POST ANY SPECIFICS ABOUT THE CONTENT OF THE SEMIS!!!

Posting the format (i, ii, iii etc) is fine.

Trust me, discussing semi 2010 problems/content is a really bad idea. Could get the question thrown out or you DQ’ed. Just DON’T do it, and don’t ask for it. You can wait another week to discuss.

phospho: was that to me? or the rest of the people in general?

It was just bc people were asking for specifics, no, not referring to anyone specifically.

And I think I just scared the crap out of this thread XP

haha, naw, not too scary.
now we wait a month to see whether we made it or not :P

^thats scarier.

phosphorlyescenc: how did you think you did?

I haven’t taken it yet, I’m taking it tomorrow =)

Btw, if you’re picked as a finalist you’re generally notified a day or two before the actual results are put up.

lol I like how they got lazy about grading part Cs and shortened it to 3 questions.

Oh yeah, last year, didn’t they have very specific requirements for part C? Like you had to write your name and number of every page?

i already took the open exam and this will be my first year taking the semis. as I couldn’t find a copy of one, I just had a few questions regarding the format of the exam only. I know there are three parts, but approximately how many questions are in the multiple choice part A? is it just like a more in-depth version of the open exam (50 questions, a - e)? and what’s the difference between part B and part C? Are AP Bio free responses similar to the open ended questions? for parts B and C, how in-depth do they want the answers to be, I know there is partial credit, basically how much do you have to write? Do they make you analyze graphs, fill out tables, diagrams, etc.? finally, is the semifinal just a continuation of the random knowledge or can you get by without knowing the exact specifics of a topic but having good analytical skills.

i know this is a lot…sorry
