USABO 2010 - Discuss

I’ll be taking the test next year, and I have a few questions:

 1. What books helped you out aside from Campbell’s Biology?
 2. How far in advance did you start studying?
 3. How hard are the questions? I’ve heard that USABO is the least legit of the olympiads in terms of prestige - compared to USAMO or USAPhO especially. Are they very critical thinking type questions or more fact based?
 4. How much math is involved
 5. How much do you think the kids who make it to the IBO study? Does it rule their life or are they generally pretty well rounded?

Thanks!

Taking it tomorrow. Thinking about bubbling in random answers. I’d pretty much have the same chance since I have yet to study.

cartesianpopcorn, if you want to know how hard they are, you can download old tests at

For those that took the 2009 practice test, what did you get for number 42? I not its definetely not E, and I’m thinking its D.

Oh god. I just looked at that 2009 exam, and I don’t think I could’ve gotten half the ones right on there…Even that pedigree question was hard, although it was one of the ones I actually understood.
Does anyone know the answer to that one (it’s #23)? I’m thinking A or B.

number 42 is C. If you vomit, your body will produce more HCl to make up for the stuff you vomited. A byproduct of HCl production are bicarbonate ions, and excess bicarbonate ions must be excreted via urine.

Yeah, that makes sense HCO3 is present in large quantities in the urine afterwards. I think number 23 is A by the way, if it was B all of the progeny would exhibit the disease.
Here’s some other questions that I’m unsure of:
45. B?
41. E?
44. C?
49. D?
35. D?

Oh right, thanks. Sorry, I don’t really know those questions… except for 35, could it possibly be A because there is only 2 mM of NAD+? :s

Does anyone know whether the following few answers are correct?
1.A
2.A
3.D?
4.C?
5.C
6.B
7. D?
8. B?

wow, i could have had 2 more weeks to prepare.
what is this…

took it today, was slaughtered by it…

What edition of campbell’s did most people use?

And do most people take AP bio before taking the USABO or just honors bio

i’m taking ap bio now, but haven’t learned enough

*** DEADLINE EXTENSION! arrgh. ah well.

My school was ■■■■■■■■ enough not to let me take AP Bio because I failed to meet the grade requirement, so I just skipped it.

Wait, a deadline was extended? When is this new deadline?

I thought the exam is closing tomorrow, which is when I’m taking it.

It ends next Thursday, Feb 25th. I’m taking the test tomorrow, too, but I could really use another week to prepare for this!

number 42 is C. If you vomit, your body will produce more HCl to make up for the stuff you vomited. A byproduct of HCl production are bicarbonate ions, and excess bicarbonate ions must be excreted via urine.

^About this post by Messiah…
Is this info in Campbell?

you guys lied to me, this year was definitely easier than last. I think I can reasonably get a 40.

^Probably

That info was in Campbell.

THIS YEAR WAS NOT EASIER.

NO, IT WAS NOT.

;)

Cut-off?

25, 26, or 27?

Does anyone know if there are points taken off for incorrect answers?

THIS YEAR WAS NOT EASIER. I think it would have been easier to take the test blindfolded.

And it’s not like I’m bad at biology - I qualified last year - but this year was unreasonably difficult.
