USABO 2018-2019

There isn’t a thread for USABO this year that I know of so I guess I would make this informal one.
Also can you guys answer my questions:
Will reading only Raven’s Biology and just using Campbell’s outlines be sufficient?
How specifically do we need to memorize things in the textbook, like do we need to memorize the composition of every amino acid and protein?

Hey, I’m also interested in hearing the answers to those questions. If anyone wants to make a collab on Google Docs or another platform for studying let me know!

I’d really appreciate any help with studying, like what materials to use etc. I’ve never studied for USABO and I’ve only taken Honors Bio 1 (A/A both semesters) so let’s hope with sufficient studying I don’t completely suck!

Is anyone still on this thread? I’m thinking of doing USABO this year.

hopefully people will be on this thread - unless another thread has popped up. @wontonandrice you should probably start studying asap if you haven’t already

I’m not sure how much I should study per day though. Should it be an hour?

Also, does anybody know if electron structures are important? I’m talking about orbitals. It seems USABO focuses more on later Campbell stuff right?

@destinedforND @wontonandrice @CavsFan2003 If you PM me your emails, I’ll start a shared google drive for a study group.

@QuigleyM Just curious, is this your first time doing USABO as well? I’m not sure how much we need to know on Campbell.

@wontonandrice I did a practice test last year, and from what I saw, we should pretty much have the campbell textbook memorized.

@QuigleyM Can you share the Google Drive with me?

@QuigleyM can you share the Drive with me too?

I’ve just been rereading campbells over and over… What other textbooks do you guys recommend? Also would you say USABO questions are comparable to SciBowl bio questions (high school level) ?

Hi - do you guys have access to any previous tests. Please let me know.

Hi @Lelouch2020, you can find past papers here: https://biolympiads.com/past-papers/.
I only read Campbell and Life once (general biology) and some PDFs of random stuffs that aren’t in those books, but I guess I have a considerable view of biology.
It is really necessary to read all of those books, such as Raven, Alberts, Lenhinger, Brooker, Vanders and Hickman for USABO or IBO? Or do you just read some important chapters? And if the answer is positive, which chapters do you read?

@QuigleyM can you also share the folder with me?

Hey all. I just posted a list of resources for USABO 2019 Open exam: https://biolympiads.com/two-months-before-usabo-what-should-i-study/. All resources are classified into major topics that are tested in USABO. Good luck!

@Martyynyyte Hello! what books should i use to hopefully make it into usabo study camp? i understand it’s quite a big stretch to even pass opens…

@BioType1 check my article https://biolympiads.com/book-list/. I provided some suggestions for textbooks. I would definitely study Campbell, Raven’s plant biology, Harvey’s biochemistry, Color atlas of Biochemistry and Pierce Genetics. Also I love Sherwood’s Human physiology. Vander’s is a bit too much. ;->

Took the exam on Friday last week, I think I bombed it, couldn’t understand a single cell-bio question ;(
