Hey guys,

Quick question. I go to a rural NE school where we have never done USABO before. However, I was able to get my school to register for it this year. Currently, I am a senior who has taken AP Bio (I have read the Campbell book once) and wants to go to an HYPS school (Dont we all though = D). Anyway, I am wondering if becoming a Semifinialist for USABO would impact my resume to my colleges RD this year as we dont get the results till March. Additionally, is the boost from these competitions large?

Thanks,
Robbie

Bump it up…any help is appreciated!!!

At those four schools, being a semifinalist would not be much of a boost.

Finalist status is very much a boost for all science Olympiads, though.

Hmm ok Kryptonsa…but would colleges even take my potential semifinialist status into account as one doesnt know they are a finialist until march

Of course it’ll be taken into account - it’s a minor achievement, but still an achievement nonetheless.

But they’re not going to look at USABO semifinalist status and think, Oh, this kid might end up a Finalist, too.

kryptonsa-

Sorry, I poorly phrased that question. What I meant to ask was will the potential announcment that I am a USABO semifinialist come after college decisions are already made. I know that Ivies announce on the 31st of march and that I will know I whether I am a USABO semifinialist before then, but wont the decision of whether to reject or accept me from the ivies have been made before that date (even though I dont see that decision until the 31st).

If you receive semifinalist status before decisions are announced, there’s no reason you can’t update the admissions office. If it’s late enough that they’ve technically already made a decision, nothing is finalized until the decision mailing date.
