I’m interested in doing summer programs next year but I don’t know if I should decide between biology Olympiad or Research Science Institute. I have a passion for biology and research you might have guess since I included those programs in this. Anyways, they both seem like a really good fit for me but I’m torn between the two. If I could I would go to them both (in different years of course) but I heard that if you sign with Olympiad you can’t do any other programs. Does it mean for the rest of the summer or all through out high school? And if it is all through out high school, then which one would you decide to be a little more better? To be honest since I love them both so much and I can’t decide, I am looking at which one ranks higher to make my decision. Thank you and goodbye
P.S~ Also could you guys make a pro con list for the both of them? That would help so much
I think you’re discounting the fact that these are incredible opportunities WITH incredibly low odds of getting into.
First step: be invited to attend one of them.
@Newdle I understand that completely but if I have to get accepted, I would have to apply and I can’t really do that if I’m still contemplating on which program I should go to. So could you stop being Mr. Captain Obvious and give some actual advice please:)
@AM.Science Do you even know how to get into them? For one, you don’t apply to USABO. What’s even your motivation in doing these? “Passion for biology and research” sure is looking like “Let me boost my chances as much as I can with these programs I’ve [only] heard of.”
Actually you can apply USABO exams.

You can worry about going other programs after passing the exam. If you are selected as one of 20 national finalists, it will be worth forfeiting all other summer arrangements.
And apply RSI here

@Newdle And here you are again stating the obvious… Of course I know to get into USABO you have to take an exam, I’m not dumb. Second of all I want to do this cause I actually do have an interest in this. My goal is to become a cancer researcher and my motivation is that I want to help those with illnesses because my grandma was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer which she died from, it’s like doing this makes me feel like I still have a piece of her with me. So how dare you make assumptions saying I am doing this just to help my chances at going to college.
Oh and by the way I said the word apply because I was thinking of RSI at the time

Oke, Sir needs-ECs-that-look-good-on-HYPSM-applications.
I hate to call you out on it, but if you were really interested in becoming a cancer researcher / helping people with illnesses, you would’ve taken a little bit of more time doing cough cough research on other opportunities and programs. Googling “High School Cancer Research Summer Programs” or “How can I help people with illnesses as a high schooler?” will give you more pages than you will be ever able to read regarding how you can already directly affect your community.
Also, tell me: will studying for a series of tests /really/ show your love for your grandma? And sorry, but to put it quite frankly, everyone has a story like that. Sure, many (including I) are very proud of your love for her, but there is really no need to bring that up in a “How do I get into XYZ?” thread.
Thank you @Marixa you are truly kind.
@Newdle look I am done with this petty argument so can we please move on and be friends
@Newdle Oh and by the way I’m not even sure if I want to apply to HYPSM schools… I mean I don’t know I like other things too. I kinda want to do humanitarian courses or psychology or maybe even acting. But at the moment Cancer Researcher is number one but who knows I might change my mind and actually try to pursue my acting dream… But anyways thanks for your straight forward advice it made me prioritize what I want to do with my life:)
