Hi
I'm wanting to go to the USAFA and was wondering if I would stand a chance
OK HERE I GO
I played softball my freshman year, but had to quick because I had to choose between orchestra and softball since I was in an academy that took two periods. However, I continued playing select.

I'm also a lifeguard if that means anything..I mean.. I'm saving lives soo..?

I participate in solo and ensembles and region and have received ones and honor awards. I haven't auditioned for state but plan to my senior year for both choir and orchestra.

I'm currently working on a project to raise over 1000 and donate it to Red Cross. I'm raising money by doing yard work, dog sitting, running marathons, and stuff like that.
I'm possibly joining the Civil Air Patrol for my senior year.
I also might be joining wrestling or swimming to have a school sport.
I'm also going to volunteer and help mentor troubled teens.

I haven't taken the SAT or ACT yet, but should be soon.

I have a 3.45 GPA for my junior year
It went down because I made 2 C's (I think) my first semester. It was a 3.7 sophomore year
I was sitting at a B, but I had to take my exams since I was absent and it bumped me down to a C.
I'm a high B and low A student.
I'm ranked 103 out of 570
I'm hoping my second semester grades will raise me up.
I REALLY want to go to the academy. it means so much to me
I recently talked to some people at the academy and they said I don't have to have a 4.0 GPA... they're looking for well rounded students.. would I be considered one? Would I have a chance?
OH and I'm a female Hispanic if that could help in anyway..

I say Forget Your Chances and apply anyway. You will never know unless you try, and USAFA is a great education. Sign up for ACT and SAT immediately. You need to start your application process this summer. Have everything ready by August, which is less than three months away. You should plan on taking the ACT and SAT twice in order to make sure you have gotten the best score.

However, have a great back up plan too. USAFA is extremely hard to get into, even for the most accomplished students. So, if you are interested in an Air Force career, also apply for the Air Force ROTC scholarship. Very competitive too, but not nearly as much as USAFA. With their ROTC scholarship, the Air Force really wants you to go to a state univerisity (it saves them lots of money). So, don’t plan on going to a private university for AFROTC. Go ahead and apply to a couple if you want, but focus on state universities where you live.

Another part of your backup plan might include the US Merchant Marine Academy. You can get into the Air Force that way too, and it is much easier to get in than USAFA. Unfortunately, USMMA only offers five academic majors, and all of them are related to ships and the shipping industry. Still, it is worth considering if you want to attend a military academy.

USAFA does want well rounded students. Not students that excel in some clubs (mostly music) but are deficient in academics and/or lack team sports or leadership on team sports. Why no SAT/ACT scores yet in May of your junior year? You really NEED to get some GREAT SAT or ACT scores to help your overall profile. While your GPA might be OK (if it’s a 4.0 scale and not adjusted), your lack of AP/IBF classes (none listed) doesn’t help. Keep in mind that your application reflects your accomplishments through the end of your junior year. What you MIGHT do during your senior year will not help you.

The good news is that you are a female Hispanic. If USAFA is having difficulty meeting their URM “goals” then this might help you get a slot at the Prep-school…if you aren’t offered a direct admit. BTW if you’re Hispanic how did you become President of ASJA (Asian student junior association)? I’m not sure whether this helps with whatever advantage you might receive from your Hispanic heritage.

Good Luck!
