hey guys i was wondering what math you guys were in when you first won USAMO. Is it possible to qualify when you are taking precalc? Do you have to be in ap calc

^ I think you mean to qualify for USAMO? Anyways, the questions on the AMC and AIME tests can be solved without calculus, so a solid understanding of precalc and everything before that is all you need to know. I first qualified when I was taking calculus because I actually studied for the AIME that year.
If you were asking about winning USAMO, I really can’t answer that question :P

Sorry for the double post, but after reading my first post, it seems as if I implied that taking precalc is all you need in order to qualify for USAMO. That’s false - I know someone who qualified while taking Alg2 and many, MANY people who took calculus and higher math classes but didn’t qualify.

^^^The first year I qualified for USAMO, I was in PreCalc.

And lisczz your index isn’t possible, did you round up?

gl to usamo participants tomorrow and wednesday :)

lol i missed this thread. i got a 132 + 80 = 212 index.

anyway
usamo = epic fail x_x

Yup, today was definitely epic fail =(

Wtvr, I guess there’s always next year?

Epic win. I think I got at least 4 points. YES. I’m positive!

I qualified with a 224 (114 AMC12/11 AIME), but didn’t prepare at all for olympiad type problems…ever…I think I got an 8 or a 9. (0/1 or 2/0/7/0/0)

^Estimations of scores for first time USAMO qualifiers are usually several times higher than their actual score. (Trust me, personal experience =D) I’m extremely doubtful that you scored an 8 or 9 without preparing for it at all…

240 (150 + 90)

My friend got a 17 on the USAMO 2 years ago without studying at all… but he was a genius, so that’s probably why.

wow i didn’t see this thread
238 (138 + 10)
ugh i didn’t even get HM!!! i have to go to blue again o well. i didn’t do that much math this year (junior year is tough)
