wow guys u are so anxious
we still have months before we have to complete part II

Marshall applicant here,

ready to rip it up.

Kinda having an iffy year already though, need to work on my math and econ grades already! Bad selection for first year students was my fatal flaw. Now I gotta bust my ass twice as hard in easy classes. Got my extra curriculars all lined up at least.

how's school going for everyone? Seems like the transfer thread died a little as the year began...

Many are still waiting for midterms! We have a ways to go here.

I applied as a freshman last year... do you think the adcoms look at your last application?

I had some really good teacher recommendations from the frosh application, and i want them to look at them again for my transfer application

BioE applicant ! (:

i wonder when usc will stop admitting transfer students?

Not any time soon I don't think - they admit lots of transfer students and have plenty of outreach.

I can't wait until they stop.

How does USC look at grades?

I took a geology course at my local CC in Spring 08 and received an F because of family issues (missed classes etc..)

1) I am now retaking the class and am 100% certain I will receive an A. Since I am retaking the class does it replace the F in my GPA?

2) What would've been better in that scenario - an F or a W?

3) I am planning to transfer to Marshall after I gather all my credits and req. and I'm 10000% dedicated to getting straight A's and I'm sure I will -

Will this single F replaced by an A effect my chances of getting into Marshall?
What will happen to my GPA?
What will admissions see in regards to my now A grade geology class?

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE Help me because I found a few posts online going both ways and I'm GOING NUTS - seriously it's affecting my health. I will do ANYTHING to get in.

ANY INSIGHT is GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!

from usc website:

Determining Your Transfer and USC GPA
For the admission decision, all grades in USC transferable courses (including grades of "D+" and below) are calculated into the grade point average (GPA). USC takes into account plus/minus grading. Marks of credit/no credit, pass/no pass, withdraw, incomplete, no record, missing grade, and passing course in progress do not affect a student's GPA.

If you repeat a transferable course, each grade earned in that course will be used to calculate the transfer GPA for admission. Further, USC does not honor academic renewal or academic forgiveness programs that allow students to improve recorded substandard academic performance.

Does this mean I am royally *****ed? No chance at marshall?

I am really close buds with my teacher that failed me and I didn't have this knowledge in the past.

Can CC professors chance grades to W by their own will?

Can I argue the ***** out of my CC and tell them I dropped the class online and that it must have glitched out and have them change it to a W?

I am sweating bullets and hitting myself in the head :'(

insight anyone??????

Ok my professor just sent me this:

"1st thing you need to figure out is if the spring score will show up on your transcript. If it does not show up then you can conviently forget to report the earlier class.

Considering you were in high school they would not assume you were in colege then anyways. The thing is you need to find out if the earlier score will be on your transcript or will be removed (thus USC will not know so no worries)

If not you then will need to argue that you withdrew from the course and see if that works. If you mentioned the lack of transportation that could have been an incomplete but that is retroactive now so hard to argue in October."

So basically I took the course while in HS in spring 08. Can I just get a transcript starting from fall 08 and submit that?

Any insight would be GREATLY appreciated.

My backup would have to be CAL HAAS - how do UC's measure these types of things?

That's pretty funny.

Anyway, yeah I'm in the same situation. I withdrew from an entire semester's-worth of classes and one of them didn't drop and turned into an F. Now I have a crappy GPA that'll transfer to USC if I get in. I might try and argue it since the rest of the classes for that semester are Ws.

UCs (unlike USC) honor academic renewal. Your school's policy also has some play into this - I know that some schools have weird academic renewal policies. At my school, you simply re-take the class if you got a D or an F and it automatically gets replaced in your GPA. When filling out the applicant you need to report the class but instead of "F" your put "AR".

Also, keep in mind that USC uses a more holistic approach when looking at their applicants. This means that unlike the UCs, they don't have a cut-off GPA point. If you re-took the class and got an A, they will of course see that and won't completely reject you for having that F. They strongly emphasize an upward trend in grades anyway. Again, the only downside is that you will have a freaking F dragging your GPA down and that is bad news if you're trying to go to grad school. :(

I am applying as a sophmore transfer and did not get accepted right out of high school. I will have my 30 units by the time this semester is over and did well in high school....currently I have a 4.0 with a job in my field and EC's. My SAT scores werent the best....will they be looking at those as a heavy determinant???
