Hey guys what do you think my chances are of getting into USC in Computer Science. I’m currently a student at the University of Illinois studying Computer Science (Engineering). I’m coming from a consistent top 5 CS program and one of the toughest engineering schools. My GPA isn’t amazing, its around a 3.43 right now, but this semester will see a dip because of fraternity pledgeship and just harder classes. I’ll probably have around a 3.25 GPA from the U of I after Fall 09, but I plan on getting that up to close to a 3.5-3.6 after Spring 2010. I’ve also taken a lot of classes at my local cc and that GPA should be around a 3.8.

Also what impact would there be if I had a USC alum write a letter of recommendation for me? I didn’t read anywhere where it required letter of recommendations.

Although I cannot say for sure, a 3.25 would be a bit low. Moreover, USC will not really consider your Spring 2010 grades unless you receive a SGR. The average admittance GPA for Fall 2009 was a 3.66; however, they will look at the whole package, so you have a shot. I’m not sure how much a letter of recommendation will help a student out, as they are not required for transfers; if you do decide to send it, you may also want to consider sending one from a professor as well.

Am I doing ok so far for USC? I’m an international student going for liberal arts next trimester.

My fall trimester grades came out and I have a 4.0 (yay!). However I only took 12 units last term, since one of my courses was an intensive language course. I’m taking 17 units next semester (the max. any student can take is 18, but I’m taking the ONLY science course offered, which is 2 units, so I can’t take exactly 18).

If I take more units this semester after finding out my language course wasn’t challenging after all, does this look ok? I was told that 12 units looks lazy, but 13’s the normal course load, and I took the number of units based on the difficulty of my courses. and guidance from my advisor/university guidelines.

What else do I need to be careful for later on? I’ve got my grades secured, and by the end of this term I’ll have all of my prereqs plus cores except for Categories I, II, and diversity left, which I’ll complete in the Spring term after I turn in my apps.

Can anyone tell me if I have a decent chance at getting in? I go to a CSU and have a 3.72 gpa with lots some extracurricular in clubs and am in National Honor Society and the Golden Key International Honor Society. I plan on transferring as a business or Econ major.

i’m signed up to the jan 22nd transfer day too. we should all meetup somewhere b4 it starts and carpool so we can save $15 on parking! or w/e it costs

Lakerforever24: I probably will park at my boyfriend’s apartment for free, which is located directly across the street from the campus (on Jefferson). What school are you guys currently attending?

@dreamingusc:i go to orange coast college @likeme: i want to know how to do LORs too. it seems that most poeple on here r just printing out the freshman forms and sending those in…

when the school says that they wont take more than a certain amount of units, does that go for elective credits too or only ones that transfer to classes?

because some of the classes i have to take for my major transfer into elective credits at usc and then the classes i am taking for gen eds and other requirements count as class credits. if i decide to transfer as a junior instead of now, then i’ll have a ton of credits. does that mean they wont accept me?

@dreamingUSC: I go to Irvine Valley College.

I will be parking on campus. If you guys want, we can just meet somewhere on campus – Tommy Trojan perhaps. Let me know what works for the two of you.

@likeme: I’ve taken a ridiculous amount of classes at my cc and will have well over 60 credits when I transfer. The 60 credit limit means a total of 60 credits can transfer over total.

School will admit you no matter how many credits you have except they generally don’t like to accept you if you’ve started taking upper level courses for your major unless you have an extremely good reason for transferring at that point.

but i have one more question about that. if i decide to major in PR instead of communications, the credit limit is 40. what if i decide to transfer as a junior, then i’ll have much more than 40 that will transfer to USC as class or elective credit. what happens then?

likeme: They look at your transcript and let you know what classes transfer as what. They will then select the classes that transfer straight across to USC class equivalents first before transferring electives, this way you will be able to complete a degree more quickly. Make sense? That is standard procedure for transferring to a new school I think. USC is pretty good about transferring of courses from both 2 & 4 year schools.

i have a question involving the math/quantitative reasoning req.the lowest transferable course for some majors is intermediate algebra. i’m attending a community college that uses the quarter system and i don’t plan on taking statistics until spring term which starts 04/05 - 6/25. will they automatically reject me because i won’t have any math completed in the time they make their decisions?

SkylineisMine and lakerforever24: Whatever works for me; I suppose we have much time to figure it out. And I unfortunately attend Cal Poly Pomona.

i am taking classes according to that website. i’ve found it before. so that means i’ll have a lot of credits (more than 40) that transfer over, either elective or for a course/gen ed/requirement, by the end of my sophomore year. since the PR major says that they don’t take more than 40, should i just forget about taking some courses that complete USC’s gen eds if i’m applying as a junior transfer?

does my question make more sense? can anybody help me?

You have taken 40 credits worth of classes that will all apply as prerequisites for the PR major at USC? For examples I hope to transfer to marshall as a business major so I expect all of my business prereqs to transfer over e.g. accounting, econ, calculus, and all of the general ed classes as well as the writing requirement. I think that is a total of 40 credits at USC right there and anything else above that I am not so concerned about since they would all just be electives. You should consider calling someone over there and asking them about this to get a definite answer.
