@likeme - I’d say your probably fine. Especially if you need to stay below 40 units. They specifically state that you don’t need to complete all of the general ed. requirements before transferring. Never hurts to contact USC (Annenberg) directly though.

does high school transcript factor heavily in their decision if you’ll have completed 70+ semester units after spring?

If you have more than 30 credits, high school grades do not matter at all.

I will be finishing up the math prereq for public policy in the spring… Does this mean a spring grade request is in order???

And basically… Getting a sgr means they are interested in you, and you have a good chance??? Unless you fail all your classes or something else REALLY drastic???

Thanks!

Good luck to everyone this year!! :)

Trust me, the wait is long but it’s well worth it in the end!!!

@archieg - It is hard to say. I got an SGR last year (I had less than 20 units completed when I submitted in Feb, and then 27 at the end of Spring) and was rejected. I think it was because I didn’t have 30 units done when they evaluated me and so they looked at my high school record.

@everyone - Thanks for the input regarding my bio class. I think what I’ll do is keep it because it fulfills part of the reqs for UCLA, and then take a Physics lab to complete the USC requirement in the summer. Fun stuff!

do SGRs get sent the same time as acceptance/rejection letters?

AMorrison- when do they send out requests for SGR?

whats an SGR? because I think I’m going to need one…

Spring Grade Requests = SGR.

SGRs are sent around April, I believe, and they are not sent at the same time as acceptance/rejection - as far as I recall. I think the earliest people heard back about acceptance was May 1. SGRs are sent usually to people who are finishing pre-requisites during spring semester, or if you have under 30 units completed. You have until June 30 to send in your spring grades if they are requested, and then you’ll hear back around mid- July.

JEEZ july?!

@ernily yea unfortunately if you have an SGR they won’t start reviewing your app all over again it until they receive your SGR and the process is a bit long, they have to sort, do all the paperwork, mail it to you after they receive it etc. etc., just a couple days here and there adds up and it eventually reaches your mailbox in July. If you think your chances are pretty decent, in regards to housing I would recommend you look ahead and put in a deposit, because that becomes an issue for many people if they find out they get in in July. So, just lookin’ out.

well, i was thinking that waiting to hear back in july is such a big gamble since UCs make their decisions around early may and give you about a month to send in your SIR. if i were to get a SGR, i’d have to pass up on the UCs and risk it all on USC?!

btw how much is the deposit?

are u guys submitting the freshman form for letter of recommendation?

Yes, I’ll be submitting a LOR using the freshman form.

is it possible to send recs online?
my macro prof. will be on leave starting January, and she’s said she’ll only do it by email and not on stationary, so I’m wondering whether I should even bother asking her to write one?

@ernily, yea unfortunately you have to risk that chance of declining a UC, but you should also be practical about your own app/grades/extra curriculars. If you really think you performed outstandingly in your academics and USC is where you really want to go I would go for it. But if you’re GPA is medium strong say 3.68-3.75 I would be cautious and see if the UCs is where you want to go based on major and what you need and not based on school name/prestige. If you provide some stats/your major/your year, we can better assess your chances, though guessing is one thing and knowing is another, but we can be practical and try to see where you stand as of now.

PS: I don’t know the deposits for housing, it’s different everywhere but I would guess 100-200$ is a good amount, and the amount will be what you lose if you decide not to go, or you get a half refund, not sure what their policies are, but I mentioned housing so you can plan ahead.

3.68-3.75 is medium strong?! noooo! alright, thanks.

my stats are mediocre at best. i may be able to raise it this qtr but i don’t think my major, asian am studies, is that popular.

Some people put in the deposit at the UC and then wait for USC. If they decide to go to USC, they eat the deposit money. I believe it’s around $300, but I could be wrong about that.
