FOR ALL THOSE WHO WANT TO KNOW IF YOUR CLASSES ARE TRANSFERABLE:Error;
helped me! I believe they do out of state of colleges/universities

hey thanks to everyone for the advice! (especially pinstripe… I guess I overlooked that?)

So let me get this straight (sorry if I’m beating a dead horse): the only credit REQUIRED to transfer is the WRIT-130 equivalent?

~~~~~~
As for my plans and academics:
I want to apply to the Interactive Media program (again, sigh…)! If I’m not accepted into the program, do you think it’s viable to take general classes and transfer into SCA later? I’m asking this because the separate Interactive Media application requires 3 letters of recommendation, and being a new freshman at UT I don’t think that is really possible (unless I go back to my high school references, but is that looked down upon?). Another problem is I’m not sure what kind of classes I should try to be taking (besides GE equivalents) that will pertain to the Interactive Media program, because UT does not have anything like a game design degree. (should I try Film+Comp sci…?)
So far at UT Austin I’ve joined the Electronic Game Developers Society and Koinonia Christian Fellowship. I was also accepted into the Turing Scholars honors program for computer science.
Here’s my high school record:
GPA – 4.43 (weighted) out of 5.0
Class Rank: 19 of 1339
SAT-Math: 770 Verbal:750
ACT-Composite: 34
Hey everyone, I’m slinking out of my lurking corner to join in.
I’m trying to transfer in Fall 2011, too, as an SCA Production major. I have no idea if I even have a shot, as my run at city college has been…uh, interesting, to say the least. I have a decent enough GPA (3.5-ish), but I’m hoping my experiences, background and writing skills help me out. I have a friend who got into SCA as a Critical Studies major with a 3.0 as a transfer, so I hope the film school gods are with me like they were with him, lol.
Anyway, good luck to everyone!
@Neji107
you’re welcome! basically the primary thing USC looks for in a transfer is the WRIT130 requirement, but on the site they do also state that they require a minimum mathematics req, like say you passed Algebra 2 in high school, or you passed/taking Intermediate algebra in college but im not sure i this is a TRUE req. Anyone know for sure?
URGENT QUESTION GUYS!
so I’m taking calc this term which is a pre-req for my major(econ). Does anyone know if USC requires all pre-req’s to be taken for letter grades?
Reason I’m asking is because I bombed my first exam, so its near impossible for me to get an A now :(
Thanks a lot for the help!!
Pinstripe - thanks for that link! Wait… an articulation history is just classes in the past that have been accepted for credit, right? Because I’m taking Anthropology 202 next semester (only 203) is listed, which is Cultural Anthropology and is one of the classes USC suggests in the brochure. And only Astronomy 101 is on there, but I’m taking a higher-level Astronomy class… D: Should I be worried?
Neji107 - WRIT130 and Intermediate Algebra are the only two reqs. Yeah, the 3 LORs for SCA are tough but you may as well. You have until February so it’s not impossible.
ledudeabides - nice to see another SCA major!
MEGUCT - unfortunately, I think all pre-reqs have to be taken for letter grades. It says that somewhere in the brochure.
“This articulation history has been developed by USC’s articulation office based on courses that have previously been transferred from this school. It is not a complete list of all transferable courses. The information on this history is advisory only and is not a guarantee of credit awards.”
Whew, okay! Not worried anymore. XD
Hey guys how’s it going? I just transferred to USC this year and wish you guys the best during the application process. If you guys have any questions feel free to pm me. I am also part of a new transfer club here at 'SC aimed at informing transfers about all the resources available to them on-campus as a way to make their transition easier.
Good luck!
cestlavie00 - thanks for the offer! I will take you up on it right now.
^Me too!
dreamupsidedOwn well,where it says “select effective period” you can pick this semester itself and it’ll tell you if the class is currently valid in this semester, but if you couldn’t find your course there…740-4628 or uscartic@usc.edu. it doesn’t hurt to ask if they may of forgotten that course! hope it helps
Alright no problems. And good luck again guys! :)
Pinstripe - wow, thank you. I’m definitely emailing. :D
So the WRIT-130 equivalent is required to apply as a transfer, right? But are you still allowed to apply if you are CURRENTLY taking an equivalent course?
What if you plan to take an equivalent course over the summer? Are you even allowed to do that…
Neji107 - yes, if you are currently taking the course or are planning to take the course before you enroll at USC then it counts. I think you might have to explain it to USC if you’re going to take it over the summer, though. You might want to email them and double check that part. I wouldn’t leave it until the summer, personally. :/
Hey you guys! I’m currently a freshman at ASU (bleh, darn scholarship money) but I already want to leave. The atmosphere I want in a school is definitely missing, so I’m going to definitely be applying for fall 2011!
I have a few quick questions, though. I know that they look at high school records if the units that transfer are less than 30, but I wanted to know if a poor high school record would adversely affect my application, assuming my college grades are up to par (which they are, I’m working diligently!)
I also am wondering if I should talk about my high school experience instead on my essay, to provide them with some more background?
Pinstripe - Thanks for the articulation link. That link alone helped me tons more than the counselors at my JC.
cestlavie - Thanks for the offer! I’m sure you’ll be quite the asset around here. :)
dream - I’m happy to see there are a few more potential SCA kids bouncing around here. Looks like for the time being, I’m the only one eyeing a spot in Production, though. I haven’t decided whether I should choose Critical Studies for my 2nd choice or something out of SCA altogether. I’ve been considering Narrative Studies or (a major that’s much further off) Anthropology. If I get into my 2nd choice, I’ll just wait 'til grad school to try for Production again. :
gousc92 - You’ll have 30 transferrable credits by spring 2011, though, right? I don’t think your high school grades will affect you negatively if you have 30+ credits that transfer, but it does say in the transfer brochure that if your grades fell short in high school, you’d have a better shot at getting in if you completed 2 great years elsewhere before applying. I think so long as you keep your GPA up at ASU, you should be able to explain in your essay why your grades were lower in high school, if you’ve got a good reason. If you’ll have less than 30 credits, they’ll base their decision primarily on your high school transcript and test scores. Depending how low your grades were (my high school GPA was a 2.8, so I decided to go to a JC for at least a year before applying anywhere), you might want to wait until you have 30 credits under your belt. But if you got into ASU with a scholarship, your grades couldn’t be too awful, yeah?
gousc92 - it depends on how bad your grades are… if you had a 3.5+ GPA and good test scores, you’re in pretty good standing. Anything below that is taking kind of a risk, even if you’ve improved a lot in college. You can talk about whatever you want in your essay… if you feel that your high school experience gives tremendous insight into who you are as a person, then go ahead. If it explains your “bad” grades, then it could help. Just make sure you don’t make up any excuses. :)
ledudeabides - I applied for 1st choice Production and 2nd choice Critical Studies last year, but I was rejected. This year I’m applying for 1st choice Critical Studies and 2nd choice Narrative Studies. NS is actually a really good major, it might be the only one like it in the country; so, I would be happy even getting into that. Don’t forget that if you would enter as a sophomore, they will still consider you for the Open/Undecided major if your two choices reject you. One of my friends applied as a transfer last year. His 1st choice was the Writing BFA program in the SCA, but he got into his 2nd choice (Narrative Studies). He is now doing an internal transfer to Critical Studies, which I think some people end up doing if they really want to get into SCA. An internal transfer is probably easier than an external one, but I can’t say for sure. You could always minor in Cinematic Arts as well. And you can take Production courses. Don’t forget: Critical Studies and Production are two tracks within the same major, Cinematic Arts. So, both types of students can take Production courses and access the SCA equipment. :)
Decided I’ll be applying for fall 2011 admission to USC! Question for anyone who can answer, I’ll have 59 credits (not sure they will all transfer), so I am a few credits away from applying for junior status. Will it hurt my application if I put Open/Still Deciding, instead of declaring a set major? The website said if you have less than 64 credits then you don’t have to declare a major.
dazedNconfused20 - As long as you are not a junior, you can put Open/Still Deciding.
