USC 2011 Transfer Thread

The biggest difference between high level math in HS and math class in college is the professor goes too fast. They demand you to have deep understanding on the lectures. I just took my math exam, everything was so much more difficult compared to the lectures as well as my TA’s guidance. But if you do all of your homework by yourself and dont hesitate to ask, you’ll get an A. I’m sure that how things work.

Btw, for last year record, how many people on the list of this thread got in ??? Im just curious.

IF they say that they do not focus on the high school record and actually do focus on the high school record, I find that very misleading.

???

EVERYTHING I have linked and quoted from official USC sources has said that if you have fewer than 30 units when you apply, they will look primarily at your high school record, and if you have more than 30 when you apply, they will look primarily at your college record. How is that misleading?

The problem is that you kids are looking at it as black and white, and it isn’t. If you have a high school record that is not at all the type that would gain acceptance as a freshman to USC, they will need a great deal of college information to show you can perform well at the college level. If your high school record is a bit below what would be accepted as a freshman they will need less college information to show you are ready for USC. If your high school record would have put you in contention for admission as a freshman, they will need very little college information to show you can be expected to do well.

The ONLY misleading thing is kids who come in here and - after they themselves JUST asked the same question only a couple of pages back - state unequivocally that USC will pay no attention whatsoever to the high school record of a student taking their very first semester of college right now.

The key word in all of it is PRIMARILY. Regardless of what they PRIMARILY consider, they will still “see” the other information. So if you had a GREAT high school record but a first semester of college with a 2.5, they will primarily consider high school, but they will SEE that you are not ready for college and you would not likely be admitted. It works both ways.

Put together the best application you can.
Have a back-up plan.
Good luck.

I have been told that my high school record will not be looked at if I have 30 credits in progress. Perhaps misleading was the wrong word to use because I do not believe USC is engaging in any underhanded activity. You have asserted information (and I am cognizant of your experience with this :D) that conflicts with what USC has told me. :)

Let’s take the time to focus on the application and not all the particulars. :o

Has everyone submitted Part I?

Sorry I haven’t been on in a while. Internet problems.

For what it’s worth, I agree with alamemom completely (she IS a USC admissions veteran)… if someone has a 1.8 HS GPA they are going to want to see a lot more college credit than 15 units from one semester. Yes, holkey, it does show “change” and “progress” to have a 4.0 your first semester but they need to make sure that it truly is change and not just temporary.

But Monologua is right, let’s not argue about the 30 credits. When everyone gets a decision, we’ll see what USC’s policy is on the 30 credits. :)

I submitted Part I about 1-2 weeks ago, I think. I got a letter about it in the mail this week. I’ve gotten a few emails from SCA too. Yay. Has anyone gotten started on their essays? I’m getting really bad writer’s block. XD

I submitted Part 1 about a month ago. And really everyone, the 30 units argument is getting extremely old! How about everyone just works hard to get the best grades they can this semester and works carefully and considerately on their USC application! I think that sounds like a good plan rather than arguing on CC.

I wrote my essay this afternoon and I finished it. Just need a little edited. I just tell my story, so that wasnt that hard for me :D

And now i have to worry about how to get my official transcript from my secondary school…

Wait, wait, wait… I have 95 credits and my AA and I meet all the requirements. I meet the foreign language requirement by taking two years of ASL in high school. So will they not take my ASL because because they supposedly “don’t look at high school transcripts once you’ve earned more than 30 credits?” Damn, playa. DAMN!

NMTheOne - even if they did, I don’t think that would count… you can get out of the requirement by getting a 4 or 5 on a language AP exam or by taking a third-semester foreign language class. I don’t think high school language meets the requirement. Don’t quote me on that though, someone else will probably have a better answer.

^I’m quoting you
muahahaha

just thought i’d jump in and say i’m applying for Public Relations and International Relations (:

Hey does anybody know what the average gpa of accepted transfer students is, and the average gpa for transfers students admitted to Viterbi?? any answers will help!!!

Bumpppppppppppp

;)

Hey guys,
I am applying for economics but am also thinking about Computer science so should i put undeclared for second option or should i do undeclared engineering. i am applying for sophomore yr and i wanna do something thatll increase my chances of getting in. I know it all comes down to gpa but this quarter i have been taking mostly economics and business related classes so I am really wondering if the classes you take affect your admission for maybe your major. Thanks! also when do you find out your admission thanks!

Just a general question to everyone. Have you guys started your essays yet? Cuz i havent. haha ive looked over them and dont know what to write and i only have one month left(Thornton is frickin crazy…)

Hey guys sorry if this question has been answered already but just to get things clear i thought i should ask. It might sound confusing but ill try. Does USC calculate your GPA from all your classes even the ones that are not transferable? and only look at if all transferable courses are done for admission? I hope you guys get my question, I want a clear, good answer :-/
