hey guys…i just wanted to see if anyone could chance me for USC. I’m pretty sure I dont have the stats to get in, but just wanted some feedback.

California Community College

Current GPA: 3.42 (Biology Major)
EC’s: President of Indian Club @ my college (for 2 quarters and will continue till i transfer), English Professors paid teacher’s assistant (for 4 quarters and will continue till i transfer), tutored for English on campus for three quarters and will continue to do it till i transfer (until spring 2011), Volunteer at Kaiser Hospital (500+ hrs), Volunteer at my college clinic (started this fall quarter and will continue) Research assistant at NASA Ames in a biology lab (started during summer 2010 and will continue till I transfer spring 2011…15 hours a week during school), Honors Student (Honors Program at my college)

Yeah I will be transferring as a Junior Fall 2010. And yaeh im working on the EC’s trying to do stuff related to my major like my internship at nasa, and things that i like doing outside of my major like tutoring in english. do you think my ec’s are strong?

yes this will be my first time applying to USC. I actually volunteer at Kaiser hospital as listed on my EC’s (500+ hours) and continuing…i also work at my college health clinic helping raise awareness about various cancers and coordinating other volunteers for various projects. I havent really looked into majors at USC yet…as I am still wondering whether or not to apply. you’ve given me some hope so ill definitely look into it! :)

Haha anandrenga, I’m sure you’ll get in. I’ll be surprised if you don’t. Your EC’s will help you, and USC is a great school. Look Under CLAS - you don’t NEED to major in Biology (only if you want but there are other majors. I’m actually thinking of applying as English even though I wanna go to dental/med/or pharmacy. :D

Hey, will anyone in this thread ease my panic?

It looks like I will be getting a B in this class…this professor grades like a hardass and it looks like there is almost no way I will be able to recover. I have a 4.0…and if it slips to a 3.8 or 3.9 will my chances of admission go down? Please answer me :(

From my experience speaking with admissions, the classes that really matter are those that count towards your major. In my case, I have taken classes that transfer but will not count towards my major or fulfill any of the categories I-V. Those classes will count as elective courses. I seriously doubt that a B in your public speaking class will affect your chances of admission. But as it was stated earlier in the thread, admission decisions seem to vary and are on a case by case basis. Thats why no one can really be chanced.

Don’t worry, One B will not kill you. There have been people who had 4.0’s who have been turned down. The key is to present yourself in a way that shows your passion to go to the school.

Well, thank you everyone I’m VERY passionate about getting in, because I see USC as my ticket out of the small, suburban town that has nothing for me. VERY passionate. My only flaws (other than GPA) would be my short answer section (isn’t great) and I was suspended in high school. I have great essays and supplimental materials though, my opinion.

And I am applying for Writing for Screen and Television in the School of Cinematic Arts. Super hard to get into…

Pikachu! I know exactly what classes i wanna take for spring but the horrible, sad part is i can’t register yet until like the second week of Dec I’m so frustrated about this! because there are people who already can and don’t care or know what classes to take. So here are the classes that I am praying (itll be nice if all of you did too lol) to still get :

Eng 102
Cinema 107
Span 3
History 2 (was gonna take humanities but my school doesn’t have it for spring, another disappointment)
Intro Broadcasting

I also went to a USC workshop this week and something that i haven’t heard of here or anywhere caught my attention! Supposedly if you are taking math 125 or eng 102, they need to be done by the end of fall or winter. That scared me and as well as for a lot of people since they are also taking 102 in spring but I’m not panicking too much since Im guessing thats why theres a spring request form and so many people have done it in the past and got accepted so not too many worries with that.

Also, Im so glad it was mentioned here about the “chance me” because it is unpredictable so the point is apply no matter what, don’t doubt yourself. I think what makes the decision is the essay! (the one for everyone, not for the particular school, although that is important too!) So everyone take time and don’t kill yourself about how special it should be because I think the topic that first pops out of your instinct is the one! ORIGINAL. I hope everyone is successful in their essays! (including me lol woohoo!) Remember, do not NOT apply. ;-)

Does anyone know if winter grades in a semester system would be used to determine the G.P.A when I apply to USC? In my CC, winter grades are due FEB 17, but usc App is due FEB 1.

Although I have heard that they do look at your spring grades to see if your grades havent dropped, for the most part, if you get in you are in.

The winter might be the last chance to raise my G.P.A or keep it at 3.7(depending on how i do this fall).

However, if they dont look at them then this fall is my last chance.

I was looking at the USC Transfer Stats 2010 and I’ve realized that those who did not have 30 units completed got a Spring Admission! Does anyone else agree?

I saw most of them got Spring Grade Requests (SGR). I did just glance over the fist few pages though. It could be for various reasons. Those students who have less than 30 units are applying as Sophomores. Therefore, USC will only have seen one semester’s worth of grades. Supposing everything is in check (good HS grades, first semester grades, etc) that applicant will most likely receive an SGR. With a SGR, USC will have more of a complete picture and then can make a more educated decision to offer admission or not.

Scenario two can be if an applicant still has outstanding prerequisites to be filled/completed. For example one applicant to Marshall had 50 units completed but still received an SGR. Why? Because he was “currently taking Calc and Econ 4 this semester (Spring semester)”. The importance of prerequisites and when you finish them cannot be understated. I’m not saying if you do not complete them by the time of your application then you will be rejected but the sooner you do, the more beneficial.

I really can’t tell you why numerous Sophomore applicants received Spring Admissions. After looking at the first few pages I did note some Sophomores well accepted. Who knows.
