USC 2011 Transfer Thread

So, do I have a decent chance at admission? Major: mechanical Engineering. I’m white. From midwest. Applying for fin aid. and rotc.

Graduated 1 of 308 in highschool
2130 sat: 610 CR, 730M, 790 Wr
SATII’s: phys 590, math2 720, germ w/listenign: 650
College: 2 years at Uva. GPA ~ 3.5

Thoughts? I really have no idea.

Hey Auto,

I think you should definitely apply! Your high school stats won’t really play a huge factor though since you completed two years already. However, they will see your high school transcript. Try to bump up your GPA to a 3.7 and send in a well written essay :D

I have a quick question I am interested in transferring to USC after this year as sophomore in to the marshall school of business. However I have read that a college writing course must be taken to apply. I have not taken this course as I decided to take spanish instead, does this mean I can’t apply?

Hi bigtuna!

Well Marshall is extremely competitive, so it is a MUST that you complete all your pre-reqs BEFORE transferring. Yes you need to have that english requirement done before you apply, you can take it in the winter or spring  It does NOT have to be by Feb, you can have it “in progress” this year though.

Good luck and please PM if you have any questions :D

hey guys so for the application it says for SAT and ACT scores the following:

"We do not require SAT/ACT scores from transfer applicants who have completed 30 transferable semester units since finishing high school. List your scores here, or simply leave the form blank and click “Save” to continue with the application. "

My question is in this case would 30 units be at the time of Feb or 30 units in spring grade request??? or after your spring semester/quarter???

That has been the most overly debated topic in this thread…I emailed the undergrad department and spoke to a USC official at my college fair, and both sources said that it was at the END of the spring semester. Hope this answers your question :)

P.S I Hate to double post, but I was wondering about the math requirement…I received a B for Algebra 2 first semester, and then I received a D second semester. Afterwards I took Math Analysis(Essentially Trig) and received Cs both semesters…so do i need to take math 125?

So if you have 30 by end of spring semester wouldnt they automatically ask for an SGR? otherwise it seems like they would have to look at your highschool grades.

Laxlove, you are one of the very few who understand this! YES, you have it exactly right.

Hey everyone, I finished today! It feels amazing!

When calling to confirm that they have gotten everything I was on hold for 20 minutes. Sounds like there is a bit of a panic going on…

December 1 (Wednesday) is the deadline for Fresman scholarship consideration. You sent your application amid the frenzy.

Annenberg Transfer Guide:

“Coursework that may be helpful for upper division classes, such as college statistics for Communication majors”
“There are no lower-division prerequisites for Communication, Public Relations or Journalism. Journalism course work taken at a community college or university will not count toward the USC degree.”
“Complete General Education categories 1, 2, 3, and 5 and the Diversity requirement.”

Ahhh ok so Im adding my spring classes at the moment but stuck between two: one is like an intro to broadcasting which I wanna take for my major as a prereq and the second is art which satisfies the Arts and Letters requirement. They both conflict in my schedule though so Im trying to see which one is more important. Above are from the Annenberg transfer guide. The first one means that if i take the broadcast one, it looks good because it helps for my major…? The second one means I dont have to take the broadcast one because they have no prereqs for my major so it doesn’t matter if i take it. The third one means I should take the Art one because it satisfies 5 and its important considering its in their transfer guide under “best preparation”. So can someone please help me decide which class I should take. Thank you!

hey everyone , so i need a little advice
my gpa for this semester looks like its gonna be a 3.7 , this is my first year at a cc (graduated hs last year). i did ok in hs but i will have 35 units completed by may. i do not work , but i am an athlete at my school and have family responsibilities so i do not have much time for other ecs. my question is , how much do you guys think ecs play apart in the decision (im just looking for personal opinions)? also , im still unsure if i should leave my second choice major blank or change it to public relations, both are in Annenberg so would it be better to leave the second choice undecided?

& @jaajaa20: you should take art. it satisfies the diversity requirement and the broadcast class will not count toward you transferring to SC , if it were me , i would take art

Can we please stop fighting over the 30 credits…We’ll just have to wait till June to know who will get an SGR and who wont.

Alritey thanks futuretrojan I hope youre right  As for your situation, gpa looks great and you have a good amount of units considering Annenberg accepts fewer than 36 units if youre applying to journalism or public relations but i do know that Annenberg does value internships or like school clubs that show commitment to your major. You can always explain your situation though with your family responsibilities and stuff in section 4 of the application. BTW we’re kinda in the same boat. Also, i chose public as my sec too but then business cause it was different but im leaving the application of Marshall blank cause I realized thats not what i want to do so i think imma be undecided as my sec option since we both are applying as sophomores and it is not a requirement to choose a sec major unless you are applying as a junior then it is mandatory.

FutureTrojan, USC does not take ec’s into account for transfer admissions, out of respect for the students who are unable to complete any due to compromising circumstances. This is as stated by associate director of transfer admissions Bruce Grier (when he spoke at Santa Monica College about transfer admissions).

Hey guys! to those of you applying for admission for your sophomore year, where do you go to school now? community college or another school? I am just curious.

Laxlove, I go to community college in Sac right now. If I don’t get in this year, I’m thinking of going down to Santa Monica for my sophomore year

thanks roffle !
