I am an aspiring sophomore applicant, so I am sure that I am going to be asked for a SGR. I would like to know if they would look at my gpa of the first and second semester separately , or together? I hope they look at it together.
My winter session ends on February 14th. Do you think that it is okay for me to estimate my gpa of fall+winter sessions, and write it in the application?
Suppose first semester my gpa is a 3.8, and winter session I get an A in english, my gpa will be 3.83. Do you guys think that it is advisable? I mean, after being in a 6 week session for around 5 weeks, I would know my grade for that class , right?
And, do you guys know when I should send in my fall and winter grades?
Thanks!

Hey guys i was just wondering what do you guys think my chances might be to be admitted as a sophomore to Marshall? So i didn’t really do well in high school, graduated with the bare minimum, no sats, had like a 2.5 gpa with alot of crap classes like culinary team sports stuff like that, pretty much i didn’t really care in high school. But after a series of events happened in my life i now know that i want to be a USC student. I go to De Anza Community College right now, i’m taking 3 classes (intermediate algebra wont count) so i technically have 2 right now but my gpa is i think around a 3.8. I’m also on the track team at De anza, and i already have all the courses i need to take in order to be eligible. I feel like i have a good amount of ECs and a good essay, i was wondering do you guys think i’ll have a chance at all to at least get a grade check?

@dtieu I recommend that you apply as a junior transfer. If you have less than 30 units by the time you apply they will mainly look at your high school stats. So my advice is to take another year of classes at your cc and maintain a high gpa.

Hello “will-be” Trojans!

Just stopping in to say hello. I was active on last year’s USC transfer thread and thought that I may render some assistance to you folks, if needed/requested; I was accepted into Marshall as a Junior for this coming Spring 2011 semester and would like to wish ALL of you the best of luck this year… it’s going to be long, confusing and frustrating process so bare with it and be patient!

@jgirl06, i go to a quarter school, so 45 quarter units = 30 semester units. ill have over 45 quarter units so even if i did well, would you say its best for me to still apply junior year?

Dtieu01 - In order for you be a junior, you must have a minimum of 64 (transferable) semester units completed by the end of Spring semester; keep in mind that 64 is also the MAXIMUM amount that USC will transfer over; unless of course, you’re applying into one of those exempt 5 programs (i.e. architecture)

*EDIT: Sorry, I didn’t read your first post before responding to your second.

Budlightyear, oh im applying as a sophomore, im jsut asking Jgirl cause she advised me to apply as a junior instead

Yeah, I’m sorry about that. Didn’t mean to butt-in.

haha its cool, ill take all the help i can get

@dreamupsidedown/budlight AND ANYONE FROM USC TRANSFERS FALL 2010 - can you post your first semesters experience? please? ![]()
(well budlight, you can let us know after spring
)

please spread the word to the fall 2010 peeps!

Hey everyone, I have a question. I am a honors student at my CCC and will be certified by my school. Does USC takes this into account? Does it make a difference?

Also, I am starting to get a little worried because I am going to end up with 2 B’s this semester and my GPA will be right around a 3.5 when I apply. I know they say a “competitive” GPA is a 3.6 for Marshall but is having a 3.5 going to really ruin my chance? I know how unpredictable admissions is but any input would help as I am getting nervous!

@Dtieu
I retract my statement haha I don’t really know how the quarter system works out. Budlightyear is definitely a more reliable source.

@Budlightyear
Can you explain the transfer credit report? A lot of my units that transfer to USC don’t go towards my major or general education…so what will they count for(assuming they account for something)?

Hey guys… I was wondering, how do all of you calculate your GPA? How should I calculate mine for USC? At my CC, all three As = 4.0, all three Bs = 3.0, etc but I know some places have an A+ as a 4.0 and an A as a 3.8, etc. So yeah. XD I have one A+, two As, and then an A or B (still need to take the final!) so I’m not sure how to factor in the A+.

@ dreamupsided0wn. At my school at least, an A+ and an A are both a 4.0 but an A- is like a 3.6667 or something. I think it all depends on ur grading scale so check to see what your school scale is!

@dream

Yeah. I agree with @Laxlove. Most school systems do not use the +/- system. My school uses it but the highest grade is a A not a A+. I think below is a good interpretation of the 4.0 GPA scale. [Calculate Your GPA](http://www.back2college.com/gpa.htm) is also a good site to calculate your GPA.

(A+ 4.0)
A 4.0
A - 3.7
B + 3.3
B 3.0
B - 2.7
C + 2.3
C 2.0
C- 1.7
D+ 1.3
D 1.0
D- 0.7
F 0.0

Hey! Sorry if this is the wrong discussion, but I can’t find any other topics that deal with Master’s students who have applied to USC for Spring 2011 and heard anything back yet. It’s frustrating, I haven’t hear from USC (I’ve tried contacting them, and they don’t tell me anything) about when I will hear from them on whether I’ve been accepted or not. Classes start soon in January…I’m kinda freaking out! If anyone is in the same boat, please post some info if you have any! Thanks

MikeAM: If by certified you mean TAP or TAG for some of the UC’s, then no, USC does not recognize those as we do not follow the IGETC pattern nor have any special agreements with any community college for a transfer guarantee. USC looks holistically at an applicant, not just what they can do in the classrooms.

jgirl06: Simply, units that do not count toward your major or general education requirements will count toward your degree progress and graduation. It doesn’t matter how you reach your first 64 units (the maximum allowed) you will have to complete the other 64 in residence as a USC student; 128 units is the minimum to get an undergraduate degree from USC. Usually, most students will try to fill the unit requirements by pursuing a double-major or major/minor -a good idea in my opinion. Does that help?

Damn, Starting to feel nervous about applying :/

So far I’m about to end my semester with a 4.0 18 units. Part of me still freaks out about the gpa not being high enough…I think it is just lack of sleep telling me that hahahahaha!

Pinstripe, I am in the same boat as I am about to wrap up 15 units with a 4.0. Just be comfortable knowing the fact that you’ve done the best that you could have done! USC is simply looking to see if their transfer applicants are capable of competing with their current freshman. Your application should prove that!

I also have 15 units and I really hope I get a 4.0 this semester. My final for my physics and english literature class will determine whether Ill get an A in the class because I am so borderline, somewhere between B+/A-…Stresses me out even more now during finals!!! But, I definitely have an A in my other 3 classes.
