USC 2011 Transfer Thread

Thanks alamemom! Are you sure the forms are optional? I can just put my official transcript that is sealed in a envelope in another one? I thought you had to attach the forms too…

sydneyral- did you send your HS and College Transcript together in one envelope?

I did awesome on my hardest finals! Wooo I feel so sleepy now. Time to rest, but first:

Can anyone answer me on the CSS profile question which was : Since the CSS profile is due on Jan 17 or 27 or something, that means it is sent separately from the app correcto? and thats fine?

And when we send in our transcripts, those dowloaded forms just go above the transcripts in a manila right? what do you guys think is better, mailing them out yourself, faxing them yourself, or have your school (both hs&college) mail them or fax them for you? Also callofduty’s question. Good question.

**CallofDuty84, **from the top of the transcript form:

http://www.usc.edu/admission/undergraduate/private/1112/Form7_2011.pdf</a></p>

USC is very flexible about how you get materials to them - as long as the transcript is official and identified as yours (by writing the USC ID# on the envelope and/or attaching the form) it will work. That said, you have the form and you have already filled it out, so you might as well use it. I like sydneral’s method of wrapping it around the sealed transcript envelope - that is perfect!

jaajaa20: The financial aid deadlines for transfers are the same as for freshmen - you must have your FAFSA and CSS/Profile filed by February 2nd. [USC Financial Aid - Applying & Receiving Financial Aid - Undergraduate - New Students](http://www.usc.edu/admission/fa/applying_receiving/undergraduates2/newstudents.html) Each will be entirely separate from your USC application - the CSS/Profile is filed at the CollegeBoard site and the FAFSA at [FAFSA - Free Application for Federal Student Aid](http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/) . The forms can be a bit complicated, so be sure to start in early to mid January to be sure you have time in case you need additional information. And it is FINE if your FAFSA and CSS/Profile are filed before you submit your USC application.

DON’T MISS FINANCIAL AID DEADLINES!

Good luck to all!

@CallofDuty84: Yes, I sent both transcripts in the same envelope. I used a similar technique for my three letters of recommendation, I just wrapped all three in a paper that stated my name, ID, and major. AREN’T I CLEVER?!

@Anyone else who had a Dec 1 deadline or is a veteran of the USC Admissions: My application status says…

“We have received and are currently reviewing your application. We recommend you check here occasionally for an update on the status of your application.”

But I have everything in. Is this normal and should I not expect change for a while?

K thanks alamemom

@sydneyral thats normal its just an update. Did you send in your transcripts and lors at the same time as your application? Cause I want to since I feel uncomfortable sending things all scattered. I feel like everything will get lost or disorganized!

Hey everyone I have a question. How does USC calculate your GPA?

If you take a class that is not part of their “GE” requirements and do badly in it, will that look bad or be factored into your GPA?

I am asking because itlooks like I did REALLY bad in Financial Accounting (C) but if I am not doing Business admin anymore, then I don’t have to have taken that class. So will it still be weighed into my GPA?

USC factors all transferable courses into your GPA. So if that financial accounting class transfers over to USC, the grade will be factored into your gpa even if it’s not part of general ed.

@jaajaa20: I sent transcripts in one, LOR in the other. I got transcripts really early so I didn’t want to keep them lying around.

And man am I *ed. I just got back my grades today and got that B. *ed. *ed. *ed. Now they have reason to deny me. I couldn’t maintain the 4.0.

Not as ****ed as I am :). Oh well I’m still applying so keep your head up high, too.

Hey btw, do you guys think that they will consider Ill be done with all the geds by the end of spring even if the grades are not as great?

@alamemom:
That link you posted,
http://www.usc.edu/admission/undergraduate/private/1112/Form7_2011.pdf</a></p>

i clicked on it and it says “All Students”
Fill out the form completely. Ask the registrar of the school from which you earned your diploma (or which you last attended) to attach this form to your official transcript and send it to:
USC Office of Admission Undergraduate University Park Campus Los Angeles, CA 90089–0911

But then I read this part on the top
You must arrange for your high school/secondary school to submit to USC Admission an official transcript of your high record. We accept many electronic methods of submission, OR you may use this form to have your school fax or mail the documents.

But since I’m mailing mine in, shouldn’t I send in the form as well because thats what its stating in paragraph above. Sorry If i’m making this complicated! OR according to you, I can just put my full name and USC ID number.

Also, whats a CSS profile? is it like the FAFSA? Should I fill out both of them?

@ sydneyral, you don’t need a 4.0 to get accepted to USC. If you look at the past threads, people have been accepted with 3.4, 3.5, 3.7 and so on… of course its more competitive if you are applying for Marshall, or SCA - but I think SCA really wants to see your portfolio, I could be wrong. I think the essay will help all of us.

@Katamari-People have been accepted to USC with a C, (I’ve been reading threads for hours) haha… if you are not Business anymore, then it won’t affect you THAT much, but just make sure you have above a 3.5 :)

@sydneyral

The statuses are a complex situation. Sometimes they are a good indicator of where your application is and sometimes it is not. USC’s status system allows for a lot of interpretation. If you look at last year’s thread there was a method to figure out if you were accepted or not through the statuses. There is also a backdoor method. I would not worry about that though. It just causes more stress and anxiety.

Send in your LORs BY FEB. 1 . Sorry for the confusion.
My winter session ends on Feb 10 and since the application is due on the 1st, do you guys think that it is okay if I write in gpa that has the winter 2011 counted into it? I think I will be knowing my grade for english 1 class by the end of January.
Do you guys believe that it is advisable ?
Thanks.

Well, I am panicking because I am applying for SCA and the highest I will ever achieve will be a 3.99999999…I know people who got in last year who had ZERO film talent and were class president and AP class happy, so I am nervous that my portfolio (which I think is SPECTACULAR and I got checked over by an actual screenwriter) won’t save me.

Oh… I see SCA is pretty competitive… but GPA isn’t EVERYTHING for SCA i don’t think… I mean its like 45% - I think they weight their decision a lot of on your portfolio. I think they only accept 25 transfers each year? I could be wrong though…

Sydneyral… a 3.9 is a great GPA  Do you think your portfolio is not good enough or something?

@CallofCuty84: No, I feel that because my high school grades will be taken into account that my high school “career” will be taken into account. I spent four years on the school television show, two years on the tennis team and did some pretty awesome film stuff in high school (I started writing at the end of high school, beginning of college). HOWEVER, I didn’t care about high school. I took one AP class because I was forced into it, but didn’t bother taking the test. I got in trouble for “disrespecting authority” in my senior year because I argued with a rather brutal and insulting AP. My gpa was around 3.5 or lower. All I know about my rank was that I was in the top 25%.

I was never in student government (hated those snobs!). I never volunteered for anything. No honor roll. Nothing.

So I am putting all I can into my college work. I HAD a 4.0 in transferable courses, found an incredible screenwriting mentor who has done a lot to help me though this application process and made the Dean’s List. I feel my writing is very good, but I feel that something involving academics is going to bite me in the ass. I don’t know why. The toughest part about all of this is that I am USC or bust. There is no other school I am passionate about.

Sorry if I am being a bit of a downer, but I am currently locked in my room trying to tune out “Two and a Half Men” blaring from the living room outside. That show sucks away all hope and happiness in my soul.

CallofDuty84, the form is optional, but since you have the form and are concerned - wrap it around your transcript and send it in! Then you will not have to worry.

The CSS/Profile is USC’s need-based financial aid application. It is somewhat like the FAFSA, but it asks about assets the FAFSA does not including home equity and any assets protected by The Simplified Needs Test. To apply for need-based aid at USC, you must submit the CSS/Profile (go to the CollegeBoard website - the SAT people) and the FAFSA by February 2nd and your and your parents’ tax returns (if you are under 24 years old) by March 2nd or as soon as possible thereafter.

Don’t worry sydneyral, we are all here on this site to help one another. Are you going to have less than 30 units? Is that why you think your high school grades are going to be taken into account? Well, even if it is… they will see so much improvement when they look at your college grades and compare that to your hs grades. USC likes to see trends in grades, why do you think so many people with college GPAs of 3.7 or higher and HS Gpa of 3.0 or lower have gotten in? Because they like to see improvement.

Are you a sophomore or junior transfer? I mean, I’m applying for CLAS and you’re applying for SCA so we’re going to apply for two different colleges. I know for a fact that SCA is really competitive and so is Marshall. But don’t give up hope. If you want me to look over your essay, I will be glad to do that.

I know it’s USC or bust for you… I’m guessing you’re applying from a community college. Right after high school, I had a good GPA 3.6, Average SATS, but I didn’t get into USC right after HS. I had a decision to make, it was either go to CC to the transfer route or go to UCI and transfer from there. I know you are in a hard position because you want to transfer as soon as possible. That’s why I chose to go to UCI.

Its not even Feb yet, but if you think that you are not going to get in, you won’t get in. But keep sending emails, start calling the admissions office, ask question, be concerned. Make sure they remember your name. During this whole application process, everyone on CC is going to lose hope at some point when they don’t hear from SC admissions. But don’t become discouraged because if you really want something, you won’t give up.

When you show interest, its a difference between a spring admission and a rejection. Enjoy the holidays and be thankful to have the opportunity to apply to colleges.

@alamemom- Alright, your positive I can fill out the form myself? Also, do you recommend filing out the CSS? Or should I just fill out the FAFSA? The CSS and FAFSA seem really similar.

Steven Spielberg applied to SCA three times, but he never got in.
You have a great gpa , and a stupendous portfolio, so please be optimistic.

@CallofDuty84: I will have less than 30 units at the time of application, and about 40 at spring’s end. I never took an SAT but my regional officer said it wouldn’t be a problem.

I don’t know if I would be considered a sophomore or junior transfer. Not quite sure. I think sophomore. I just know I have one more try next year if I don’t get in this year but I think I can get in this year if it’s only getting into USC and not the SCA.

And I’m done with the application…my deadline was December 1st, so there is nothing else I can do. I emailed my regional guy today and he told me not everyone gets a SGR with under 30 units, so we will see if they notice my 4.0 slip. I probably will get a SGR and that will be okay as long as I get an A in everything from now on.

Thanks for offering to look over my essay though  It’s pretty solid, but if you’re still interested you can PM me. I wish there was another screenwriting applicant here that would like to trade samples and stuff but there isn’t. It kind of gives me hope that I’m the only one but I know that’s not happening

I know this is kinda off topic but holyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy crapppppppppppppp this semester suckeddddddddddddddddddddddddddddd.
