USC 2011 Transfer Thread

do we have to complete all pre-reqs to be competitive?

i’m applying into sophomore year, so i can’t.
and my school’s course selection is very small, so i can’t partake in some requirements anyways.

(spanish is so unpopular here that it is dropped every year, along with the other languages. it hasn’t been offered in two years and wasn’t offered last sem, and will not be offered in the spring. this is an example of other courses that would fit in with the requirements)

I called USC, but the counselor sounded to sad and tired. He said not to send in cover sheets if I post by mail, but I don’t trust him.
I will call again to talk to someone else, and also will email my regional counselor in a few days. IF ANY ONE KNOWS THE ANSWER TO MY QUESTION, PLEASE PLEASE let me know.

I only have 2 sentences written for my essay :confused:
And I’ve only done 1 short answer :confused:
I think it’ll be a last minute thing :/

@Nainasethi, can you post up what they say when you call them por favors? I think the councilor was right though. Your college is sending them by mail, or electronically?

Hi all, I was wondering if applying without a High School Diploma hurts my chances. I am currently in a community college with 45 units as of now. I will appreciate your responses and suggestions. Thank you

HELP! Did anyone else take an introductory biology class at their college that transfers to USC? I just took one last semester and I checked the articulation between CSU Fresno and USC and it doesn’t list my bio class. I was under the impression that all intro bio classes transfer to USC. Should I e-mail a counselor or do I have to fill in the pre-approval document?

You could contact USC and find out? I’m pretty sure you’ll get credit somewhere for it. Or check with your school to see if the biology course you took is equivalent to another biology course offered there that is on the articulation with USC.
For example: Bio 1000 is equivalent to Bio 1005. And Bio 1005 has an agreement with a USC Bio class. You know what I mean? Sorry if I confused you :/

hello everyone!
i know this isnt really a “chances” thread, but im just really freaking out. i really want to go USC (transfering after one year from JC) but im not sure if its possible.

i graduated HS with a 4.2, i have a 4.0 in community college right now and im getting a pretty impressive additional letter of rec (from someone on a commitee board[i wont be specific] at USC).
the only problem is that im wondering if i should join a TON of clubs and extracurriculars during my short last semester at JC or should i just rely on my HS activities to put on my resume???
i would appreciate any advice! :)

btw: communications major :)

@amahlia376, don’t focus too much on clubs but focus more on an activity that shows you’re committed to your major like an internship. A while ago i asked my USC advisor about what matters more in terms of ECs and he said “An internship in the related area of your interested major/career is the best thing” in those exact words. There has been many posts about USC not caring for ECs so in my opinion, I think it just means don’t have a load of ECs but show them you’re committed to your major maybe in a couple but an internship fits the job.

@jaajaa20
thank you so much! that makes alot of sence :)

@RamboRambo

Yeah that definitely makes sense…I did that though. For example I was checking the articulation agreement between the city college here in Fresno and USC and the transferable bio class is called bio 1…which is the equivalent to bio 1a at Fresno State…so it doesn’t make sense that it’s not in the articulation agreement. I’m assuming its because not a lot of people have transferred from csuf to usc and so some classes aren’t on the agreement.

Idk if that made sense but if anyone could answer this that would be great. I calculated my cumulative transfer gpa by looking at the classes listed on the agreement between csuf and usc. Would i get penalized for an inaccurate gpa if some classes end up transferring that weren’t listed on the agreement?

@jgirl06:

Idk about your inaccurate gpa consequences.
But don’t you sit down with a counselor once you are accepted and enrolled into the school to find out how your credits from your other school will be placed towards your graduation at USC? But then again, I’m not sure about this either, I could be talking about another university :confused:
But yeah if the class does articulate from the CC to USC then I’m pretty sure you can talk your way into it transferring from Fresno to USC. But yeah definitely try to call and ask them.

jgirl06:

You will find that some classes between CC’s & CSU’s are interchangeable with each other because CSU’s do not have a problem with students taking lower division courses at a CC as a CSU student (they’re both public schools within the same state); however, USC does and will have a problem with it because USC students are not allowed to have concurrent enrollment to any other schools without first getting permission -almost impossible unless you’re doing an exchange program or study abroad.

The only way you can get that class to transfer over to USC is if you file a petition for it, but you can only do this AFTER you’ve already been admitted into USC.

I ran into the same confusion with a calculus class I took at a CSULB. It was transferrable/equivalent to the calculus class at my CC, but not to USC; however, that same class from my CC is transferrable/equivalent to USC. Since it was a pre-requisite for Marshall’s application at the time, I couldn’t do the petition.

CC to CSU: yes
CC to USC: yes
CSU to CC: yes
CSU to USC: no

Does that kind of make sense? Sorry if I caused more confusion for you. haha.

To be quite honest, I think the real reason behind all this is that CSU’s are in direct competition with USC being as they’re both 4-year universities. To maintain the integrity, quality, and praise of USC’s reputation, transferring classes from other 4-year institutions really isn’t a good idea, otherwise, people wouldn’t want to pay the premium if they can get the same somewhere else (trust me, they’re NOT the same). The cost of one class at USC can pay for an entire full-time year at a CSU.

Additionally, you can see how common this actually is if you compare articulation agreements between other schools, yes, even between other CC’s. The eligibility of a course to be transferred is less dependent on the actual course, and more-so on the school in which it’s coming from and their course syllabus.

@ Everyone:

Cover sheets/Closing sheets are only used if you’re faxing something. The purpose of those sheets are to separate your fax message from other incoming fax messages. It’s much easier to sort out that way since some fax letters can have multiple pages. You do NOT need them otherwise.

@RamboRambo & Budlightyear

Thanks! That definitely helped. I was going to fill out a form of pre-approval but that makes me feel better that I can petition it if I get into USC. So I’ll just stick to the gpa I have now.

Budlightyear are you at USC now? what’s your major?

jgirl:

Yes. I got accepted with last year’s applicant pool. I’m stopping in occasionally to help you guys out since this process can get so freaking confusing sometimes; it was driving all of us insane! I’m an Accounting major and -still waiting on Annenberg’s approval- Communications minor.

hey guysssssssssssss.

sorry I’ve been absent for the last ten pages. XD work took over my life over break.

ps. 25 days until the deadline. time to get cracking. :)

I remember how freaked out I felt before my deadline…good luck, everyone!

I just sent an updated transcript too.
