Hello transfer applicants!

Thanks to snowboard129 for posting a Financial Aid deadline reminder waaaaaaaay back in post #972! You guys move FAST in this thread, so I thought I would pop in with another FA reminder as the deadlines approach.

The CSS/Profile and FAFSA are both due **February 2nd **for transfer applicants. It is FINE to submit both before you submit your application - USC is very experienced at keeping everything organized.

GOOD LUCK!!!

What’s the CSS Profile thing? I’ve never done one before, always only the FAFSA?

The CSS/Profile is a need-analysis form used by many universities (including USC) to distribute their own funds - the very important institutional grants. The CSS/Profile is administered by The College Board (the SAT people), so there is a fee to complete it ($9), and an additional fee ($16) for each college you list. You can find it here: [CSS/Profile - student financial aid application](How to Complete the CSS Profile® – BigFuture | College Board)

If you only complete the FAFSA (which is always FREE to submit and send to colleges), you will only be eligible for Federal Financial aid such as the Pell Grant, Stafford loans, Federal Work/Study, SEOG, etc, which will add up to at most about $11,000. That is a drop in the bucket compared to USC’s COA of ~$55,000. So to become eligible for USC Grants /U you MUST fill out the CSS/Profile in addition to the FAFSA.

Because USC uses the CSS/Profile in figuring your need and the CSS/Profile considers assets such as home equity not listed on the FAFSA, the amount your family will be expected to contribute may differ from your FAFSA EFC. (And by “differ,” I mean it will probably be more…)

Oh, and for the FAFSA, be sure to use the correct site [Home - FAFSA on the Web-Federal Student Aid](http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/) to request a pin or fill out the form - do not pay any fees to complete it on other sites - it is FREE.

More official info about USC Financial Aid here [USC Financial Aid - Applying & Receiving Financial Aid - Undergraduate](http://www.usc.edu/admission/fa/applying_receiving/undergraduates2/)

And unofficial hints here http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-southern-california/839970-faq-usc-financial-aid-2010-a.html?highlight=faq+usc+financial+aid+2010

Good luck!

wait wait wait

how do you get your USC ID? O.O ahh i thought you get it after submitting the application?

OOPS i told my school to send my application without my usc id. darn it, gotta go back.

@jaajaa - is there anyway to meet her in person? Go to her office and ask her what the delay is.

Are letters of rec’s required for transfers?

@pikachu, I spoke with a USC representative and they said that you don’t need your USC id to send your transcripts; they use your name and birthdate to save it until you send the rest of your application. However, it might only work if you have a unique name.

@callofduty, Letters of recommendation are not required for transfers for regular admissions, but the school you are applying to might require them.

@PikachuTrojan If you have gotten any letters from USC, the student ID should be on the bottom. I’ve gotten several letters from Viterbi and they gave me an ID to use. Or you could log onto your USC connect and then click USC Connect Profile and it will display it on the top. Hope this helps.

Well… I’m applying as CLAS… do we still need them?

Do we need to put our USC ID on our transcripts??? I mailed mine with my CC’s ID. My name is definitely unique though…not an “Alex Johnson” lol

Think I’m okay???

@CallofDuty84: I don’t believe CLAS requires letters of recommendation.

@snizzle77: You will be okay, and like alamemom said earler, USC is great with sorting and organizing things that are sent without USC ID’s before applications are even sent. But to anyone else sending in transcripts personally, I just wrapped mine in the cover sheet with my ID.

Here’s a question for veterans of the USC admissions: How much is legacy taken into account? I not only ask because I have a step-grandmother (never knew my biological grandmother and only this one) was a USC alum and I listed her under family. I also ask because I overheard some guy who claims that because his grandfather is a professor at USC that he has pretty much been admitted. Any thoughts on this? I mean, USC is a private college and I wouldn’t be shocked if legacy is taken into account.

Sydneyral: This area is kind of sketch; I’ve heard of many legacy applicants being rejected. I think that just by being a legacy applicant, it doesn’t necessarily give you an advantage over any non-legacy applicants if the alumni isn’t an active member of the alumni association (i.e. a consistent contributor/donor to the university).

However, if you’re application is a good fit to receive an offer into the university, and your application is of equal quality to a non-legacy applicant, then your legacy status may give you a slight advantage. (Just FYI: I think legacy is direct bloodline relationship, but don’t quote me on that). Buy yeah, legacy won’t give you an advantage if your “entire package” doesn’t match what the committee is currently looking for.

Keep up the hard work; legacy or no legacy, it will pay off and you won’t regret it!!! I promise =)

Hey guys I’m applying as Marshall BA and I was just wondering what we need to do for marshall supplement… I’m kinda lost. Do we need to send in anything in addition to our actual USC application?

@Budlightyear: I thought so. I just wanted to make sure because this person I overheard it from seemed a little too confident in their ability to get in using their family. Though who knows? Maybe this person is a strong overall applicant as well.

And you probably right about the bloodline thing, but I put my grandmother down none the less. Haha, if it has even the slightest bit of importance, I put it down!

@slee0103:

Marshall application you need to:
-make USC ID, type up your essay and all that good stuff on the website using that ID
-mail them your transcript (if you have under 30 transferable credits needs high school transcript too)
-mail them any letters of rec (not required)

:)

When determining our avg gpa for transferable courses, it says to do it on a 4.0 grading scale.

However, my transcript does NOT have +'s or -'s. should I just do the typical A=4.0, B=3.0,etc??

How should I do this??? help please!!

What do you guys think about including HS EC in the activities sections? I had a lot of volunteer work hours which has a lot to do with my major and would love USC to know about it.
Thanks!
(Still working on that essay and just cant get it down right…Anyone else having trouble?)

Do I need to fill in form #7( listing my classes and grades) if I directly send in my transcripts to USC?

@snizzle77: you’re lucky, gpa calculation is much easier without +'s and -'s (you got it right).

@snowboard: don’t know about HS EC’s. But don’t sweat the essay too much, just start writing and it’ll come to you, then you’ll be on a roll. I submitted my application on the day of the deadline, Feb 1.

@nainasethi13: you shouldn’t have to manually fill out anything if you’re submitting an online application through USConnect. Just send the transcripts, or have them sent on your behalf, whatever works better for you.

@callofduty and anyone else, shes not teaching for winter so she wont be in her office until spring and thats after the deadline. Im thinking of just switching my majors around psych as #1 since its CLAS which doesnt require anything just the USC app and journalism as my 2nd major since I believe it isnt mandatory to fullfill the Annenberg requirements or any other major’s requirements if its listed as your 2nd major so not having the letter of rec wont hurt me. For your 1st major, you have to do the requirements in order to be considered. Is that right? Does someone know how to explain how this whole Majors thing works? Maybe thatll help me out with my situation right now… PLEASE HELP :(
