jaajaa - you must fulfill all requirements for the majors you are applying to, even if it is your second choice.

Well this is odd, my updated transcript finally went through to USC but now is appearing as a second “College/University Academic Summary”

No need for concern right?

Hello,
I currently attend NYU Stern as a finance major, but due to recent family circumstances, I am strongly considering transferring to USC Marshall to enroll next year (as a junior). There are two problems: 1) The application is due Feb 1st, and I would probably start it today. 2) My college stats are not amazing- 3.33 GPA. I am, however, a URM. I was wondering what you guys thought my chances of getting in were. This is more or less an emergency and I need to be closer to my family, and this would be the only way by which to do it. Also, what would transfer life be like? I am in a fraternity at NYU that doesn’t have a chapter at USC, but I would love to still be able to party and stuff. Thoughts? Thank you in advance.

So what do you think I should do? Either:
- Change majors to psych so I dont have to worry about not completing any requirements like the letter of rec for Annenberg
OR
2)Take a chance and hope my professor will last minute send it and continue my sec essay for Annenberg and see what happens?

I say option 2 and then have psych as your second choice anyway just as a back-up.

What does it mean if you are not required to choose a second major? It seems like most majors require you to have a second choice, but mine does not, and its a competitive one. I think they only accept 5 or 6 transfers out of about 20 applicants. Is it possible to get into your major but not into USC?

@snowboard129: No matter what you have to be enrolled at USC to attend one of the schools within USC. HOWEVER, I’ve heard of applicants who got in by their sheer talent at their major (film, theater, etc) while having qualities that the University would generally reject. It is possible.

How do articulation histories (not agreements) work? I go to Cal State Long Beach, and there is an upper-division interdisciplinary course that, at my school, fulfills philosophy and literature requirements.

The USC Arts and Letters general education requirement states:
In this category students develop their skills for critical analysis through intense engagement with works of literature, philosophy, visual arts, music, and film. The works studied may be associated with a particular country, time period, genre, or theme. Students will learn to use techniques of literary and artistic analysis. At the same time they will become familiar with disciplinary and interdisciplinary methods of argument and persuasion.

The course I am interested in taking at CSULB is “Law and Literature in the Classical World.” Its course description says:
Introduction to the study of philosophy and interpretation of law through classical literature that encompasses fundamental legal questions and ancient legal source material and the application of modern theories of literary criticism to ancient and modern law.

The articulation history for my school doesn’t show that this course fulfills the Arts and Letters requirement. It isn’t listed under courses that transfer, but it also isn’t in the courses that don’t transfer section.

If accepted for Fall 2011 at USC, would I have to take my syllabus and course work to a counselor to prove to them that this course should fulfill the Category V requirement?

woodendynomite

If there is a chapter for your fraternity you should be able to transfer from the one at NYU to the one at USC. I am not sure what kind of details you have to worry about but when you get an acceptance from USC contact the fraternity at USC and see what you have to do. i would get busy and apply to USC now. Ask today for a copy of your grades to be sent into USC. Good luck!

Anyone going to transfer day?

Hey guys i just talked to an admissions counselor and he said it was NOT true that if you have 30 units by the end of spring they’ll overlook high school grades… it’s by Feb 1…? I told him that someone else said it was 30 by the end of spring and he was like… that is NOT true.

Then they’ll look at my HS records, and they will see incredible improvement. I don’t know who to believe, and I am not going to care anymore. If they focus partially on my HS records, then they will see nothing but an upward trend. If it’s a bad thing that my HS records are involved, they now have proof of 27 units completed with 3 more on the way with my college transcript update.

Either way, I know it will work out

Yeah. This topic has been discussed plenty.

Alritey then thank you @dreamupsidedown. Ill just see what happens.

Is there any type of effect of applying one yr and not accepted but applying the next yr? As long as theres improvement I wouldnt be worried right?

Hey jaajaa -

I totally agree with sydneyral - Say someone has a 3.4 GPA from HS then get a 4.0 in College. That’s amazing improvement. You want them to see that. Also, jaajaa, if they want to see “more course work” then they MIGHT give you a spot for Spring 2012! But if you get rejected as a sophomore, apply again
Don’t give up!

Add me to the list: Business Administration, Marshall.

Yes I sure hope they see my hs grades and college grades in that light- an improvement! hahaha
So is everyone frantically trying to get someone to revise their essay like me?

Hey guys… I’m now a junior at USC and I wanted to say that this thread helped me IMMENSELY last year throughout the transfer process (I transferred in last fall)… not only that but I met people on here that I’m actually friends with now at school.

If anyone is applying to the music industry program (your application was probably already turned in) and has any questions about it feel free to message me!

Now I’m doing this all again to apply for law school in the fall…

Im still going to apply next year if this year doesnt happen and continue the improvement for sure.

Another concern, whats better considering the whole low HS record:
-Taking the GEDs and other tranferable courses meaning all the right courses which shows they were prepared, organized, committed and they know what they are doing but they dont have a great GPA
OR
-Someone who has a better GPA but didn’t take all the right courses meaning some transfer and some dont and they only took maybe like one GED course but it shows they can handle college courses but at the same time shows theyre just hanging around not committed or serious to usc by getting over the GEDs and aware of the transferable courses and instead just taking any course.

Do we need to fill out any paperworks for the letter of recommendation? Please let me know
