USC 2011 Transfer Thread

Also: I haven’t heard anything confirming this…but I personally believe that they take note on who visits

I’m about 40 minutes away from USC without traffic…As much as I’d like to stay at home, there is no way I will be able to make that commute in that traffic in the morning.

Anyone here NOT planning on living at USC/surrounding area?

sydneyral- Or do you think I should call them and tell them that I want to change my second major instead? Does anyone know where I can find the pre-req’s for English?

By the way, 40 minutes is a long drive and knowing LA…there is ALWAYS traffic!! I’m planning to find a off campus, that is, if I get in - _ -

We have a friend who chose to live in Pasadena instead of near USC in his JR & SR years at USC. Our kiddos & their friends preferred living within a block of so of USC. Rents are somewhat inflated and inventory is more limited, but they do like being able to roll out of bed & make it to class on time. It IS more expensive than commuting, for the most part.

@CallofDuty84: I would call and explain your situation, including your change of heart. I would then ask them what the best course of action would be and if they could do anything to help you out. They may not be able to do anything, or they may be able to swap your majors. I don’t believe there are any prerequisites for English, but I’m not too sure. Check your transfer brochure.

@HImom: Pasadena was something I was looking into…simply because I’ve always loved Old Town Pasadena. Being from the suburbs, my father is extremely worried about me living in the area around USC (even though I carry methods of self-defense). Personally, I don’t think the area around USC is THAT bad, but I get out a lot more often than he does. The high rents are making me more wary than the neighborhood itself.

Commuting isn’t something I would want to do, but if we do the math and it ends up being cheaper than an apartment, so be it. There is also the metrolink…

sydneyral, do you think we have enough time to go visit now before they check our apps?

I don’t think they’re going to check our apps until end of March…so yeah, I do.

But you can call admissions and ask when they will look at us.

Document list still hasn’t updated… :(

Call 'em! Ask them what’s going on.

Hey guys
Something has been really bugging me since I sent in my application so I hope you guys can help me out.
I took Intermediate Algebra (Math 40) first semester to fufill the math requirement for USC. Due to m grandfather becoming ill, I had to drop the class to take care of him due to the fact that my mother is a single parent. I dropped the class with an W. I explained my situation in the optional short answer. I also told them that I am currently taking the class for Spring Semester. Do you thing they will penalize me for this especially because it is a nontransferable course?

Here are some stats:
Second semester at Cypress College, Class of 2010 from Cerritos High School
completed 29 transferable units after summer+fall semester. I currently have a 3.41 GPA.
Currently taking 29 transferable units. will have 58 completed by spring in addition to all my GE requirements, diversity requirements and English requirements. My major, which is Philosophy, Politics and Law, has no major requirements. Regardless, I took 2 philosophy and 2 political science classes in my summer and fall semesters. Received an A in all of them. Currently taking two more polisci courses in addition to honors philosophy. I am applying for sophomore admission. Do you think I stand a chance? I did not send in a letter of recommendation but many say my essay was well written. it speaks about my challenge of transitioning from a 2.5 HS gpa to finishing 50+units and fulfilling all of USCs major requirements within one year. I also was involved in an internship for a state assembly candidate and helped run his campaign. Lastly, I am in the honors program at my school in addition to working 16 hours a week. Do you guys think I stand a fighting chance? I would be happy with a SGR…I know that will motivate me to get a 4.0. Thank you for your time. Fight on!

Zaman, yes do it! Make sure you explain to them in the “misc info” part about your situation on the application. You aren’t just a number (as defined by your GPA). You’re an individual person, and make sure to get that across to them through your essay. It’s really your time to tell them who you are!

Good luck :)

@Zaman92

Don’t worry about grades and all that boring stuff; already promised you as a bday gift that I’m getting you admission… hahaha

If you guys are worried about the status of your app, just call into their office at:

Admission and Financial Aid Contact Center:
(213) 740-1111

They are really friendly and helpful. I sent my HS transcript in a few weeks ago and it still says I’m missing it. Just called in and they told me that they actually have received it, but haven’t updated the system.

sydneyral- Yeah, I’ll call them. I checked the brochure, but there’s nothing on the requirements for English :frowning:
I tried going on the website too…but nooo luck!
Zaman- I was really close to being hospitalized during my Fall semester, so I took a W. I explained it, and emailed my regional counselor.

Some guy got into USC with 9 W’s, so I don’t think one W will hurt. Although we are all students, we all go through problems with families, friends, and even with our health. I’m sure half of the committee will understand at least.

hey guys, SC still hasn’t received the college transcript i sent them 3 weeks ago. i’m taking one in person to the admission office today.

kinda glad they didn’t get the original, because the new one has my Winter grades and also lists me as a “Dean’s Honor List Student”.

i’ll let you guys know how it goes today when i drop it off.

as for the questions about living on campus or commuting; i live in Glendale, so its about 20 minutes away (14 miles). i’m going to commute even though i would love to live on campus and get the complete college experience. i’m a little worried that i won’t make as many new connections and friends if i don’t stay on campus :/

it is taking forever for the status to change! >:(

Dear College Confidential Community,

I am currently a freshman at USD (University of San Diego) and want to transfer for my sophomore year to USC. DO you think I will get accepted? Any input from past experience would be great. I applied to College of Arts and Sciences as undeclared.

@andrew777: You might if you’re a freshman, but I know people who attempted to transfer from a 4 year to USC and were told it would be best for them to just finish at their 4 year. That being said, your GPA is a little low but if your essays are that great you might have a shot.

I don’t think anyone knows with USC though…I mean, I asked people to chance me and either got no answer or the typical “well you never know”…so you really don’t know until you apply

Andrew-

I totally agree with Sydneyral completely. You don’t know really if you will get in or not. However, my counselor told me that every applicant is looked at the same. Therefore, I’d have to disagree with Sydneyral statement (no disrespect or anything). Regardless of where you are, they evaluate the same. There have been many UC to USC transfers in the past if you look at the threads as well as from other 4 year universities.

I was just going off of someone else’s past experience. I knew someone who wanted to transfer out of UCSB into USC as a junior. So they called an admissions rep and had a talk. The rep told them it would be best for them to finish at UCSB.

Now, they didn’t say “don’t bother applying”, but they did suggest that. I don’t know why.

Haha, maybe the admissions guy wasn’t having a good day. They should encourage people to transfer.

Maybe he was senior standing, but a junior you know? So he probably had a semester left to graduate? Idk… that’s strange.
