hi everyone. I applied to be a junior in mechanical engineering for the fall

D applied to major in sociology & promptly switched to undeclared once she started at USC. She then applied to and was finally admitted into Cinema (on her 3rd attempt). I agree that living near campus has been good for my kids–that’s the whole point to me & them of attending USC. It’s true that you can get nicer lodging at lower prices if you want to drive further, but rolling out of bed & walking to campus is very attractive to my kiddos.

Few questions:

1) Is it safe to say the most important factors for being accepted as a transfer into USC are: academic GPA and the rigor of those classes?

2) How much stock do they put into ECs and high school performance?

3) Any other factors USC takes a hard look at besides the aforementioned and the applicant essay (I’m sure I’m forgetting something)?

4) Realistically, what would my chances be of making it into Leventhal as a transfer out of a CC given this information: Currently I have a 2.95 cumulative GPA with about 50 completed units. I essentially wasted my first two years by taking classes that I really didn’t need to take, and even worse yet, earned some "B"s and "C"s in classes that I should probably have aced. I’ve just recently decided on my major (Business - accounting) and started to take my course work seriously.

I’m planning on retaking two course that I received either an “F” or “D” in, but if I understand correctly, USC weighs both grades and averages them out, so I won’t be able to bump my GPA up as much.

Also, I’m going to try to take as many honor’s course as possible (that satisfy USC’s GE, writing, and diversity requirements) to help show USC that while I may have slacked off early in my college career, I’m serious now about accomplishing something.

How much will it help that while I started off slow taking courses that weren’t exactly necessary, I really started to pick up speed a little my last two years and showed much more dedication to my course work and earning respectable grades?

USC is my dream school to get into and I really don’t want my past performance to hold me back, but I also realize there are many potential applicants out there who did it right from the beginning and will have a leg up on me, so all honesty would be appreciated.

Thanks to anyone who feels like replying.

@deltron, hahahaha I’m listening to Deltron 3030 right now. I just found that coincidental.

Still freaking about this admission though. USC isn’t even my number one choice, I just want to get out of my current college badly.

If I’m looking to do Undergraduate Research this summer (for physics, my major), should I tell USC that somehow? Would something like that matter? (I haven’t even applied to some of the programs yet, but I’m hoping to get accepted to at least one)

lol +1 on Deltron 3030, listening to “madness” right now.

@coolio: make sure you say that as a “future” aspect of your EC’s. I could be wrong. I suppose someone could argue that it doesn’t count since you haven’t actually done it and could technically say what ever you want… but I would say put it in there ;)

yee my USC Connect portal updated my admissions documents. Everything has been received. I’m relieved =)

@stressed444,

your username should be relieved444
not stressed

Hi All, I applied to USC, my document page still hasn’t updated, however, I called the office and the admissions lady told me they have everything I needed. I’m relieved.

Gpa is 3.9 60 Units, most of which will probably not transfer over… I’m applying for their Engineering program.

I’m worried about my essay though, i don’t know if its good enough, can someone look over it and give me HONEST feedback? also, i wrote 2 paragraphs for their short answer questions…

@snizzle77: I guess so huh? Lol ^__^

I’d be more than happy to look over your essay, Eddie01x1. :)

@snizzle, I can edit that part of my application?

coolio:

Ohh I thought you meant you hadn’t sent it in already, I’m sorry ! I’d say leave it. No point in calling in and having them add it…I forgot to put something important in there too (club I joined) but it’s alright. The most we can do now is just wait :D

Does everyone else’s status say this:

“We have received your application, and it appears we require no additional information at this time. We will be reviewing applications through the month of March, and we expect to be able to meet our commitment to notify freshmen by April 1st. We often like to see the mid-year grades of freshman applicants. If you have not already done so, please submit your final, fall term marks when they become available. You may submit them at USConnect by clicking “mid-year grade reports”, or by visiting www.usc.edu/midyeargrades. Sometimes, in the course of our review of applications, we find that we need additional information. In such cases we will mail a written request. If you receive a request for more information, please respond promptly.”

Wondering why it’s talking so much about freshmen admission…I’m pretty sure I marked that I’m applying as transfer :/

thought they would have cleared me today but guess not. waiting another week…

@snizzle: I think everyone who has gotten a change has that as their current status. I know I do. There is no miscommunication, we are marked as transfers.

sydneyral, ok good thank you :)

Dear CC community,
Why is it that in the past members have so many credits for transfer when they are accepted as a sophomore?
I am a freshman looking to transfer and will only manage 27 credits where as some who are accepted as a sophomore have 40+ semester credits

A sophomore is any student who has completed 30 to 59 units

I currently have 50 credits completed and am taking 19 this semester. Like mikesmaru said, sophomore status means you’ve completed a certain amount of credits. This is my second year of college so that’s why I have more than you.

I will transfer in with 42 credits. 12 are in progress now.

However, it doesn’t matter what I transfer in as: I have to start as a freshman again thanks to the rigor of the screenwriting program. I will be at USC for four years regardless
