USC 2011 Transfer Thread

“To best prepare for an Annenberg major, plan to complete the
following courses at your current college: General Education
categories I, II, III and V; at least one term of a foreign language;
and the USC diversity requirement.”

one term at a semester school is one semesters worth, at a quarter school is its roughly 2 quarters worth and from the statement above it is a recommend course not a solid required course… so it looks like your in good shape

@coral
Do you have any suggestions if there is anyting extra an applicant can do to help their chances of gaining admissions? like go on a tour, or speak with counselors still?

For fin aid, USC wants our parents’ tax returns info, we just fill out that one form right? We’re not uploading or faxing anything in, correct?

hi i am a usc transfer hopeful. i am currently a sophomore with a 3.6 at a liberal arts school in nyc. i got a 32 on my acts. my high schools gpa was like a 3.5. i want to get into usc soooo badly.

@transferguy, tours are led by undergrads so it wont really help you in any way. if you can reach a counselor that will help. just call and ask to speak to one, when you get a hold of them you can just ask them to look over all your stuff to make sure that they have everything and then ask if you can follow up with them in two or three weeks and take it from there. like i mentioned earlier these people have a say in your admission and its theyre job to talk to you so just be polite and concise and hopefully your name will stick… this is your best bet, and its not unprofessional - in the real world your more likely to get a job if a recruiter knows who you are as opposed to just submitting a resume and sitting around waiting

@stressed, eventually you will have to fax/scan them in, you have to check your uscconnect account to see what info they want, but if your parents taxes arent done yet then just fill out the fafsa and css as best you can with your best estimates of income and submit them

@coral
do we have to send in our parents taxes even if we do not need any financial aid? or is it just optional?

@Mikes … i forgot to mention i’m applying as “Open/Undecided”

When i went to a transfer session a few months ago the counselor told me its OK to apply undeclared when you’re coming in at 30 units.

@ anyone who will answer…LOL

I’m wondering if I should contact my counselor about credits that will transfer over. I have over 70 credits, but IDK what will transfer for each category. How should I go about asking something like this to him? Would they even be looking at transcripts at this point?

I’m applying for Music Industry BS

@transferguy if your not applying for fa then you dont need to do anything if you dont want, but i would highly recommend applying. its up to 55k a year, and thats is you find cheap housing - rates right for a shared apartment can up as high as 2300 a month - the average - imo - is about 1300-1600 off campus for something nice, so unless you have 55k lying around you should consider applying regardless

@MDG, one of my old friends just graduated with that major! if you are transferring in from a cali school you can use this website to find out what transfers and what doesnt:
[USC ARR : Articulation](http://www.usc.edu/dept/ARR/articulation/)
some out of state schools are also on there, this is the website counselors refer to when they want to know what transfers

@mikes and whoever else is interested

the transfer booklet has the stats for 2010 transfers, including the percentage of transfers accepted from community colleges, avg gpa, etc.

http://www.usc.edu/admission/undergraduate/private/1011/Transferring2011.pdf

thats the link. go to the fifth page.

they don’t list the information anywhere else except there. i don’t know why they don’t post a transfer profile anymore.

When my D applied & was accepted as a transfer, she didn’t have her foreign language requirement met either. In fact, she hadn’t started on it when she started at USC but later took two 6-week summer courses in German at our in-state flagship & then took 3rd semester German at USC & finished her language requirement. It was challenging, but she finished & we were all relieved.

Haha. I’m so happy I don’t have that foreign language requirement for my major :slight_smile: Come to think of it…I don’t have any prerequisites for my major. You may think this is a good thing, but if anything it makes for tougher competition. As someone in another thread said, I constantly feel like I could have done more to make myself a stronger applicant because of it.

So if you do have prereqs…do them extremely well :D

hey so my application status says that USC needs more information however when I click on the document portal it says no more documents needed… everything is in… is this just because processing everything takes time? here is my status -

Application Status:

The University of Southern California is pleased to offer the ability of students to receive online messages regarding the status of their application. However, all decision notifications are made via postal mail.
Undergraduate Application (Part II, Fall 2011)

We have received your application, and it appears we need more information. Please ensure you have submitted all required items. Due to the high volume of application documents we receive, allow sufficient processing time.

@chapmanpanther,

Yeah, probably needs processing time. Wait until this Friday, if it still doesn’t change, you can just give them a call and see ;)

@coralgirl

About the Viterbi counselors… do you think it would be helpful to contact them and introduce myself and maybe ask a few questions?

@chapmanpanther: Mine was the same way for months after I had all my materials in.

@coralgirl what was your friends emphasis? Technology or industry? I’m really hoping I get in…any advice on what thornton is looking for?

@coralgirl

I apologize if I offended you. I just found the whole notion weird. But obviously since you worked at the admissions office you know what you’re talking about. Once again my apologies.

@snizzle what was your favorite part of the tour?!
