GUYS! You do NOT need 30 units by application time (Feb 2nd or w/e), YOU NEED 30 units by Spring if you don’t want them to consider HS stats. I only had 18 Units by application time last year and I got a SGR (Spring Grade Request), my HS stats were <2.0 and no SATS.

Wait, @alamemom and @madbean, someone earlier in this thread said that they spoke to a USC admissions rep and they said that the AP units count towards the 30 units… do you think they made a mistake or something?

Hey everyone, what kinds of activities are you involved in in college? I don’t have many… some volunteer stuff and Phi Theta Kappa. Joining the Film Club next week too.

I mostly do shadowing programs, and I might sign up for our pan-african club since they need diversity but i’d really like to do something political!

nabilesmail, it would probably be important to include the information that your transfer application with 18 units at the time of application and no SATs was unsuccessful. Are applying again this year?

I think it is confusion: applicants email or call USC asking “Will my AP units count as college units?” and USC replies, “Yes! Of course your AP units count as college units!”

The question needs to be very specific: “I will have 18 units complete at the time of application, and five AP tests with scores of 4 or 5. Am I required to include my high school record and tests scores with my transfer application?” (Please remember that you do not have ANY units for AP tests until after you are admitted and a transfer credit report is prepared - at this point you are only guessing about the AP credit you will receive and can only state the number of tests on which you received a 4 or 5, not a unit total.)

**nabilesmail **is a perfect example: if you look at his/her past posts (see post #79 of this thread) you see that he has near-perfect college grades at application and for his SGR, and yet was not accepted. That is because, with fewer than 30 actual-college-units-taken-at-an-actual-college, USC still looked at his high school record and test scores - but he neglected to submit his test scores and was ultimately rejected. (He has much better prospects this year with >30 excellent college units for USC to review.)

What you will find is that USC really gives every applicant every opportunity to complete their applications. They won’t reject your application if you don’t submit test scores when you have only 22 college units and you didn’t submit test scores, for example, they will send an SGR while they wait for your test scores to arrive. On the other hand, USC won’t hold you by the hand and send reminders to submit test scores - you are all transfer students, ADULTS, who have to take responsibility to see that all your materials are received.

@alamemom - you’re probably right about the miscommunication! I had a feeling that might’ve been the issue, so I sent a very carefully worded email to them just to verify what you said. I’ll copy and paste my email and their response when they reply so that everyone can be sure. :)

Arr. This stinks for me though, as I only have 14 units this semester. 16 more next semester won’t be that bad though, and I’m taking very general stuff (like Intro to Sociology, which they recommend anyway) so I think there’s a good chance that all of it will transfer. And just in case, they told me I don’t need to resubmit my test scores because they have them on file.

I sent them a email too! But I believe nabilesmail might possibly be right considering that the reason for rejection in his case might of been the fact that he did not complete the USC lower division writing requirement which is a MUST. So maybe it wasn’t the tests?

My Reasons for rejection were most likely because I didn’t meet the lower div writing requirement, OR because I had 27 units by Spring (4 that I thought would transfer didn’t, and I appealed for 3 of them to not count lol).

You can apply with say 15 units, and then take 15 units during Spring and be accepted without good HS work. The only time they look at your HS records is if you have lower then 30 units in by Spring.

The lower-division writing requirement is just ONE class, right? One advanced comp-type class? Because it says “students generally complete two” but I think the second one might be a pre-req for the class you would have to take to fulfill the requirement… am I right in saying that?

email admission counselor about 30 units issue- i will have 21 by the time i apply

The quality and rigor of your undergraduate academic course work are primary considerations in our review process.

that is a vague and incredibly useless answer. :P

by the way, welcome to the thread nainaseth! haven’t seen you post before. which major are you applying for?

Well, my question was answered atleast. I am meeting my college’s representative next week, so I will question him and hopefully he will give me a very eloquent reply!
I didn’t do so well in high school . I got a 3.4 gpa and average sat score. I moved from India in my sophomore year, so I had lots of problems. I could not take the classes I wanted to take, was too late to write for the school newspaper . Basically, I was in my senior year when I understood the system and scored a 4.0 gpa.
I am here at SMC , trying to get 4.0 , so I can transfer to USC as a sophomore. Since my major is print journalism, I can only be accepted as a sophomore , not junior . They don’t want a transfer student standing at junior level . I am also told that I should not do more than 36 units ( 36, but 33 transferable units ) in my case because of my major.
I am really hoping that I can join USC as a sophomore !
I am already a commissioner here at SMC, and writing for local papers.
I just DO HOPE that they will understand that I moved from a different country in high school , and things got really, really hard for me.
Good luck, everyone !

Well 3.4 isn’t so bad(then again I have similiar stats so i’m telling myself that too)
But nonetheless, welcome!

They should definitely consider the fact that you moved from India during high school. In any case, I’m adding you to our transfer list. :)

We have something in common. I plan to transfer into Annenberg as a sophomore as well, but only to broadcast instead of print. I will have 18 units (or maybe 15 because one class in online) this semester and 18 next semester. I wish you the best in transferring!

So english 101 and english 102 fulfills their writing requirement rightt?

edit: btw im currently taking a hybrid english 101 class right now (because there was nothing left) its when you meet 1 time in person and meet the other time online a week. Do you guys think USC will accept this?

PikachuTrojan - whatever your school offers that is equivalent to USC’s course WRIT 130 fulfills the writing requirement.

So looks like this is the first status that we’ll all have. At least we won’t have to worry about status changes for another 8-9 months. :P
