USC 2011 Transfer Thread

@CallofDuty84

I applied to the School of Cinematic Arts for film & television production. I could have been rejected for a number of reasons: low GPA, 2 Ws, lack of completed pre-reqs, non-challenging courses, etc., but I suspect the 2 Ws in spring played the biggest role. It was probably a combination of all of the above lol.

@transferguy2011

Whew. Good to know I’m not alone! Have you applied to USC previously? If so, that could be why our statuses are on crack.

James- Yes, I am. Are you?

Transferguy-What are you applying for?

I think the SCA people are having their status change since their deadline was Dec 1st

@panther- So they asked for a spring grade request, and you got two W’s? That is exactly why (in my opinion) SCA majors have pre-reqs? I didn’t know that…What was your GPA?

Also, not trying to lose hope, but how can we appeal if we get rejected? IF I don’t get a place for the fall, but in the spring, I’ll be really happy. I wouldn’t mind staying in Irvine another quarter. But If I don’t get in, can I appeal? I wouldn’t mind going undeclared.

@everyone…also, do you know if we can switch majors at orientation? I’m not saying from CLAS to Marshall, but something within our own college, say I’m English now but I wanna go to Human Performance or something like that…?

callofduty - yup. who are you taking it with? my enrollment window was a bit late so i think i got a pretty tough professor…

@callofduty84, I applied to annenberg and IR, hopefully its a god sign

@CallofDuty84

Hahaha yes that would seem like the obvious reason, but things are never black and white with SCA. As far as pre-reqs, I just had to get like writing or English out of the way, which I hadn’t at that point. My deadline was actually the same as yours, Feb 1, as is every SCA transfer applicant’s, with the exception of screenwriting applicants. I had a 3.5 coming out of HS, a 2.5 (or 2.7, can’t remember which) my first semester of college, and a 3.5 the second semester (with 2 Ws).

@panther13
ya i applied to usc last year, is it a mistake with the system for my status to change so fast and not be a SCA major

james- I’m taking it with Lewis. I think, from what I remember.

@panther-
Yah, well your cumulative GPA would a 3.1 then I think, and with the W’s, it wasn’t a good sign but sometimes you gotta protect your GPA. I think its bad getting a W if you get a SGR because they wanna see how you do before they make their final decision.

Who’s deadline is Dec 1st then?

My deadline is december 1st. And I am an SCA applicant. No, I do not have a status change.

@CallofDuty

If I knew then what I know now… I wasn’t even trying to “protect my GPA.” One of the classes was just boring and I didn’t like the professor of the other, so I withdrew and enrolled in ballet and biology. Had no clue it would show up on my transcript-hopelessly ignorant smh.

SCA Screenwriting applicants had a Dec. 1st deadline.

@sydneyral

I have no clue why they make you guys turn in your stuff so early if they don’t start looking at it until they start looking at everyone else’s. Unless the status updates are just lagging and they have already begun looking at yours…

Has anyone managed to translate the statuses? What does “reviewing your application” actually mean? Who’s looking at it, for what, and so on?

Alright so here is the thing with the statuses. Keep in mind this is speculation and there is no “proof” but the observable trends support this reasoning. This is the same exact reasoning used last year so unless USC changed their status system all should be the same.

As I previously stated, it is not the message of the status but rather how they progress. For example, the progression should look something like this:

to…

to… (this is important) The time between forwarded to the next status seemed to determine admission. A quick turn around meant admission. A long wait meant denial.

The last status also was sometimes replaced by “The committee has acted on your application.” Once again it was the time between the statuses.

Some of you may be wondering why would it go to being reviewed to once again reviewed by a committee. It has been speculated that first your application is reviewed to make sure it is completed, ie have transcripts, etc. If not you will most likely receive a status saying you are missing paper work. Once completed the application will be sent to the committee. For example, if you applied to Marshall they will then decide on it. Then that decision is sent back to USC and the letter will be printed out.

Another thing observed is USC seems to always print their letters on a Friday. Don’t ask why. haha.

So take for example a transfer applicant to Marshall last year.

Let’s take a look at ilovemtsac.

Her app was “forwarded to committee review” on b - Marshall**

Her app was then “acted upon by the committee” on b - Marshall - Accepted**

As you can see it only took 4 days for the committee to make a decision. A quick turn around in status is a good indication of acceptance. Also, this is verified since ilovemtsac just posted that she received their package. On the other hand if it took 3 weeks or more to change then one can speculate this means rejection.

I applied for freshman last year and I had my status forwarded to the committee sometime in early March. However, it did not update with the acted upon status until nearly the end of March. I knew this was a rejection. Just keep in mind this all speculation, so it’s up to you if you want to believe it, but generally the trends have been correct.

So that is the story of the statuses. It is a bit confusing but don’t worry. As you can see from her date of acceptance she did not find out until May, so you guys have some time. I apologize if my grammar or spelling is off. It’s been a long day.

Just re-posted what I said about the status several pages back.

Thanks Mitch. I believe it is correct. What would we do without Mitch and alememom!

So true! It’s blessing to have you guys on this forum!

That being said, let me ask you guys another question. Do you plan to pay your EFC from your/your parents’ savings when you get in? I was wondering, if my EFC was higher than what I expected and I couldn’t afford it, would it be possible to take loans for paying my EFC?

For example, let’s say COA is 45000 (off campus) and your EFC is 10000. Then, USC offers you a FA package (including grants/scholarships/loans) of 35000. Now, can you take other loans than Stafford for paying you EFC of 10000 or a portion of 10000?

I wish i knew if other annenberg applicants had status changes also

About half this thread is Marshall haha, we got 5 SCAs?

for those in the quarter system, i’m assuming we don’t find out whether we’re accepted or not until mid to late June after our spring quarter ends…

@panther: Seriously. And then I was told in an email that we are evaluated with the freshman applicants because my program has no “transfer pool”. So in all honesty, my decision could have already been made and is being held until May. Granted, this is all speculation but after being told in an email that I will be evaluated with freshman for SCA, it makes sense to me.

I’ve also read on other forums (studentfilms in particular) that sometimes…status do not change at all. This happened to one of the grad students (it seems the only talk of USC screenwriting on the web is among grad students…) and he received an acceptance without a single status update. I don’t know if it’s happened here.

@whisper: That’s a good question I need answered too. I wish my EFC was 10 grand. That would be smashing. :/

I remember many posts back people have stated extracurriculars and activities aren’t weighted as heavily as GPA or essay and short answers. Does anyone know if this is also true with Marshall?

James- For us, most likely, because we have the writing requirement in progress. We’ll find out early july or mid July! That’s why my counselor told me :)

mike–I personally think its important to have good EC’s, i think it can result in a rejection or spring admission. Let’s say your GPA is low (3.2) but you have really good ECs and essays, they could give you a Spring Admission and tell you to maintain a 3.5 in the Fall before you come in the Spring. (That’s my opinion)

What’s everyone elses opinion on this?

Dear CC community,
Please Chance me. I really want to transfer to USC yet am not sure what my chances are. Anything thats not “It isn’t really known” or something along those lines would be extremely helpful.

I am currently a freshman at USD (University of San Diego) and want to transfer for my sophomore year to USC. Any input from past experience would be great. I applied to College of Arts and Sciences as undeclared.
