Vinceh – re Spring Admits: yes, that’s exactly my point. The stats for this year’s class seem to suggest that Fall and Spring Admits have virtually identical stats. In most years, spring admits are not included in the fall student profile because not many spring admits are bumped to fall. This year, it appears that all or close to all spring admits were bumped to fall and the admitted and enrolled student stats remain the same. So there doesn’t seem to be any support for the boneheaded notion by some ( not me) that USC has been using Spring admission and enrollment to “hide” less qualified students from USNWR. Including the Spring Admits with the Fall stats results in no change.

I wasn’t challenging your post notelling just adding more support. The statistics and message of (at least) the last six years are stunningly consistent (I’m sure some will find a conspiracy theory in that) - the average USC enrollee is a high performing high school student with an “A” to “A-” UWGPA and SATs in the 95th%-tile or higher. What more do people want?

Thanks vinceh and nottelling, for offering some great food for thought. I am also curious to see that despite the total applicant numbers soaring (I believe about 33% since 2008), the stats makeup of the current class is so similar to the one 6 years back.

I’m also looking at the stats of the average applicant from 2011 and comparing them to 2012. Since the CA is credited with increasing application numbers from 37,210 (2011) to 46,104 (2012), I wondered if the additional 9000 applicants were substantively weaker than previous applicant pools. Here’s what I found in Applicant UWGPA/mid-range SAT/mid-range ACT

2011 applicants: 3.54/1750-2100/26-31
2012 applicants: 3.56/1750-2100/26-32

Almost identical, and with a slight upward trend in the latest pool. Go figure!

silly question but why does moving to the common app lead to more applications submitted to USC?

The theory is that when the process is so easy to just add one more college to one’s Common App list (from their handy drop down menu), why not? Whether USC constitutes an honest match, a merit award shot, or a Hail-Mary reach, a nervous student now has the impulse option, right? In the past, students would have to find USC’s own app by going to the USC admissions website specifically, which indicates more deliberate selection rather than just adding one more school for good measure?

Any idea of how many successful appeals there were?

I am a senior in highschool, and I really want to apply to USC. I’m actually really stressed out right now, because I really want to go to USC Cinematic Arts. But ive been getting really confused, because on the freshman applications, it tells us to pick a major and give in the supplements, etc. but at the same time, many people dont get into Cinematic Arts freshman year.
I’m really confused because I dont know if i should start creating my portfolio, or should I apply as undecided, since I’m still not sure what I want my portfolio to consist of.
I have soo many questions to ask, but I’d EXTREMELY appreciate it if someone could help me out!

rarawrx: you might want to post a new thread with your questions: this thread is about the stats of the incoming class- and you will get people interested in that topic here.

My opinion: apply to Cinematic Arts if that is what you want, as if you go in undecided it is what you really want. You cannot go in undecided and then declare yourself a cinematic arts major. You would need to do an internal transfer and be accepted into the school. So if that is the school you want, apply now.

Ray,
In Marshall there is a dual major. It is Bus. Ad/Cinematic Arts. If you have interest in business as well as cinema this might be a major you could list as a second choice or list undecided as a second choice.

SCDad,
There is another thread which addresses the number of appeals. We do not have official appeal numbers for the class enrolled in August.

For the class that entered in 2011 there were 844 appeals. Only 24 were accepted for fall and 24 for spring.

Vince,

Here is information regarding the 2010 entering class:
International students 11%
GPA of enrolled freshmen 3.7
Mid SAT range of enrolled freshmen 1950-2170

These numbers are from a copy of the 2010-2011 freshmen profile.

It should be noted that SC does enroll a large number of first generation college students. This year it was 14% of the class. The university also enrolls a large number of students from underrepresented minorities.

There is diversity not only in ethnicity, but also in schools represented. In the entering class there are students from 1,476 different high schools/prep schools.

thank you so much. appreciate your input :)

Thank You GG. The 2010-11 pdf is the only one I can’t find.
