Definitely it was the nicest acceptance packet any of my kids received! My son's came late Jan - early Feb (4 years ago). He was up for a scholarship.

omg this makes me so nervous....
how I would love to get an acceptance and hopefully scholarship in the next couple of weeks....

I applied for Scholarship Consideration but I just want to be ACCEPTED with my stats.....

would I hear back from USC at the end of january/early feb too?

Nah, it's rolling notification all the way up through early April even for those who applied before the scholarship deadline. If you DO get a scholarship, you get notified earlier than everyone else.

If you don't hear right away, don't sweat it, you're probably still in the running. Jan/Feb admits seem to be mostly the "big money" scholarship recipients like full/half/quarter tuition.

what about if your up for national merit/national hispanic scholarship?

i was a national hispansic finalist, do i automatically get the half tuition scholarship if im admitted, (since there is no form to fill out about your top choice school for national hispanic as opposed to national merit)?

its a national hispanic finalist too? are you sure? I thought it was only national merit finalists..but I could be mistaken?

Very exciting, my best friend's daughter (who lives back East) got a call today from Viterbi wanting to interview her for a possible scholarship...so the admissions/scholarship process is now underway, folks!

which scholarship? i applied for viterbi. is that normal for them to make individual calls when they haven't even sent out acceptances?

Don't know which scholarship, but she was told to expect her acceptance packet in a week or so.

i think it was jan 30

is there something unique about her that would grant her that honor (which i'm so reasonably jealous of)?

USC used to have a specific scholarship for National Hispanic Scholars, no interview required, which they are not offering to the new applicants. I called the admission office to get clarification on this and they say USC no longer offers the 1/2 tuition for National Hispanic Finalist.

She is top of the line stats wise -- already accepted to Notre Dame Early Admission (or whatever their program is), Ivy League type stats, still in the running for National Merit whatever (up to Semi-Finalist now I think?). I don't know what the gender stats are for Viterbi but I'm guessing a woman engineering candidate who has top stats and would also bring "regional diversity" is someone they'd like to have...just guessing here. It will have to be a good offer to lure her from N.D. ...

any offer from usc is a good enough offer :) but then again, maybe she shouldn't accept...room for one more scholarship recipient!!! however, it would be nice to have a girl--any girl--in an engineering class. i'm really going to miss having girls in my classes next year :(

lol

well, while it's bad (the M/F ratio), it's not that bad. I believe every class I've taken, including all engineering, has had at least one woman. "At least" is an absolute minimum too, since one class did actually have only one woman (out of 14 students) Typically there's at least several, and a subtle mix of internationals and domestic students.

Regardless of whether they specifically target female engineering applicants with scholarships, I think female applicants who express strong interest (and capability) in math, science, and engineering stand out, and standing out of a crowd is important for anyone when there's too many qualified applicants for too-few scholarships.

It certainly seems, to me at least, that engineering girls here on full or half tuition scholarship tend to be really up to snuff which is at least a positive note.

Thanks for your feedback...very interesting about the engineering dept.

I've had second thoughts about whether I should have shared quite as many specifics, even anonymously, since it's not my kid...I get carried away by enthusiasm and am obviously very proud of her -- and excited -- as I've known her most of her life and would love to see her at USC. :) But maybe it wouldn't be bad for this thread to die out to help preserve her privacy in case I spoke out of turn.

Good luck to all of you!!!!

Is USC still continuing witht the NMF half tuition awards? Do you think being a NMF is a big hook for being admitted to the university?

If you look at the scholarships listed on the website or the 2007 Undergraduate Application, the National Merit Finalist Presidential is still offered. The National Hispanic Finalist and the National Achievement are not listed this year as they were in prior years.

USC sent both an admissions certificate (which was beautiful) along with an acceptance package. None of the other colleges she was admitted to sent a certificate like this. It really made her feel special. It was so nice I put it in her senior scrapbook. :)
