My letter does not contain the words you say. It says “Congratulations on your acceptance to USC…Although you did not receive the Trustees or Presidential scholarship, we are still pleased to offer you the Dean’s scholarship…” Also, on my USC Connect portal, I am able to sign my intent to register and deposit money as well as RSVP for admitted students events. Also, my letter says “please refer to the Explore USC section in your packet in order to learn about visiting our campus in the spring.” But I haven’t received a packet!? Which is why I am a bit confused…

The Dean’s Scholarship is NOT offered to students who are not accepted. Also, you are asked for a housing deposit.
Please contact your admissions counselor and tell him/her you received the letter, but the packet has not been received. The counselor should be able to see you receive a packet ASAP.

thanks, everyone! I came home and double checked and the letter specifically says “Congratulations again on your admission to the University of Southern California…We are pleased to inform you that you have been named a USC Deans Scholar…Although you were not selected to receive a USC Trustee or Presidential Scholarship, you should be proud that you are among 18 percent of our incoming freshman class to receive some kind of merit aid from the university…We look forward to welcoming you to the Trojan Family…” I think I’ll call tomorrow and see what has happened. Perhaps something got lost in the mail?

Thanks, guys/gals! And congrats to you too, ciaobella713! :)

18%? Wow. Past literature talks about how 25% receive merit aid. Maybe it has to do with admits being offered scholarship money vs matriculants? No big deal, I just think that is interesting :)

coast,
Funds for merit aid are given to SC via donations. With the economic downturn perhaps donations were lower than usual. Perhaps the 25% means students in the entire undergraduate student body. I know many scholarships are for continuing students only.

Since I have been volunteering that is the lowest percentage I have seen for freshmen.

Oh my goodness, congrats! That’s wonderful, I’m very happy for you. I have no idea why the school didn’t give you a packet I’m sure they’ll send you one, I’ve heard they’re gorgeous. going to have to wait till March, hope I get one!

For those of you who have received the Deans scholarship - does anything change on your USConnect profile? After seeing that referee’s admission packet never made it - it makes you wonder what happens if other things get lost in the mail?

there is a slight difference on your USC portal. you can click on a box titled “RSVP for admitted students” and also “enrollment deposit.” my friends who haven’t heard anything about scholarships don’t have those boxes displaying in their portal.

Referee,
Thanks. My daughter has been accepted, and has those boxes on her USConnect profile, and has been invited to interview for the BACC/MD program - but there is no indication in the RSVP section of any scholarships.

I’ve seen a few people that have already received the Deans scholarship letter but I don’t know if there are still more letters to come - or if that process is complete. It seems like if you receive any sort of scholarship it should be reflected on the USConnect profile somewhere.

Also, did any acceptees receive the USC Orientation brochure today? Apparently, move-in day is Aug 17th, welcome week is Aug 17-24th, and classes begin Aug 22nd. Maybe it’s just me, but that sounds really early compared to many other colleges that don’t start until early/mid Sep.

i think that’s pretty standard… vanderbilt’s move-in day is august 20th and yale’s is august 26th. tulane’s is august 27th, but the NOLA experience starts on august 22nd for those attending.

GoldOwl that’s the difference between schools on quarter vs semester. semester schools tend to start in august and end in may, whereas quarter system starts in sept and ends in june

Gold Owl,
Some years ago USC started later. A large plus to the earlier starting date is finals are OVER before winter break. So holidays can be spent with friends and family without having to prepare for final examinations.

Welcome week has no classes. There are social events, musical events and all sorts of activities and mixers. Each organization is represented at a welcome fair. This is a chance to meet your new classmates and learn more about the campus and Los Angeles.

^My uncle told me that he went to USC back when finals were after break and that he was always incredibly stressed over the holidays. So starting earlier is DEFINITELY a good thing!
