USC Admissions

I'm a senior interested in USC, and on my high school's website where they have info on colleges/ stats of students from my high school that got accepted it says

Campus Visit: Recommended

SAT Subject tests: Recommended

I live in Illinois, and we take the ACT 'round these parts so the SAT Subject tests are not very common, and I have not and do not plan on taking any. Also, due to my very far proximity from LA I cannot visit the campus that easily. Does anyone know if

a) I must do these things to get in, because sometimes "recommended" means "you better do it if you want any chance"

or

b) It doesnt matter if I do this or not, theyre just trying to lure me to LA by making me visit/ take unnecessary tests

Thanks

Campus visit is definitely not necessary to get in…but i do recommend it when making a decision (if you’re on the fence about going there vs. somewhere else). Also, some people’s visits gives them more motivation to finish strong, do well on tests, essays, etc.

SAT subject tests–iffy topic. If you can get a good score on them along with your ACT, they will show consistency and certainly help. I think it’s one of those things where, like the essays, it really differs for everyone on whether it makes that much of a difference. I’ve always had the attitude of “Better safe than sorry,” though, so I’d take them if you’re serious about USC.

I will definitely visit if I get accepted, no doubt about that. I’m not enrolling in a school without visiting it first.

For the SAT Subject tests, no other school I am looking at requires them, and with a 34 ACT 4.3/3.8 GPA I kinda think my scores are competitive enough, so I dont really want to take them.

mclax8: I would check with USC’s department for you major on whether you should take the SAT Subject tests. We are also from Illinois. My son will be a soph this fall but last year he took the ACT and they recommended the SAT Subject tests. He took them just to be safe. His stats: 31 ACT with 4.93 GPA UW and 5.4 Weighted.

Unweighted GPAs don’t go to 4.93.

Definitely contact your department and ask them about the subject tests, and the SAT in general as well.

They do if you’re on a 5-point Grading Scale, Hawkwings.

I’m an entering Freshman from Illinois and I got in without any subject tests. I had a 31 ACT and 3.98/4.33 GPA. I really expected to get rejected because I didn’t take the subject tests though.
