I have a few questions about the USC and syracuse apps…

If i am applying to usc’s film school, how many total recs do i need? usc itself requires one, and the film school requires three. does that mean i need 4 total or 3 total? Can i just send in a counselor rec and two teacher recs?

The syracuse app asks that I give all my app material and teacher recs to my counselor, who will send EVERYTHING in. Is this really required? What if my teachers and counselor send in their recs seperately, and I submit my app online?

thanks in advance

Sorry I would help, but I really don't know. I would call USC and check. It seems to me that you should have 4, since you are applying to the film school separately from the university itself, but I'm not sure.

I also have another question about recs (for USC and in general): can I send more than one rec and if so can I have one sent by one of my High School teachers and another one by my music teacher (violin)?

Sadly, with old age comes forgetfulness. I don't really remember what I did for recs. I would think that it would be ok to send in more than the recommended number of recs. They may not read the extra ones, but it probably wouldn't harm your chances. If you do send just one, make sure you choose the one that will write the best about you, your qualities, uniqueness, etc. The best case st to have them both write one, and then decide later. I had three teachers write recs for me. One of them turned out to have spelling errors, and false information about me. Luckily I had two other letters to choose from.

oh.....did you read your teacher's recs before sending them? I thought your teachers are supposed to send them themselves. I gave my teacher the envelopes with addresses and the rec forms and will get them back to send them in. I won't be able to read them?! Is that not normal?

anyone? Is it normal that you read what your teacher wrote in your recs before you send them? I thought your teacher is supposed to send it himself

I think you have the right to read the letters but from my experience, schools generally make you wave your right to read them. It doesnt make sense to me but that is the way it goes.

You were just more prepared than me, I guess. I just asked my teachers to write me a rec (each went about it in their own way), and they just handed them back to me, in unsealed envelopes. Whoops. :)
