USC and U michigan chances? I'll chance back!

Hello. I am a new member of the CC community! I have browsed through forums but havent created a profile since now.

I am a current senior at high school and I would like to know where I stand for USC and U michigan. Both out of state

17 year old white male

GPA:
UW-3.55 gpa... (I'm not lazy or anything but it seems that I just suck at some particular subjects...)
W- School doesnt weight but it should be high if it were to due to my courseload
Rank- School doesnt rank
Courseload- Full IB diploma. That means I have taken the most challenging classes I can ever take. I probably have taken 3 non-honors or IB classes in my entire hs career.
Will doing the IB diploma help me in admissions dramatically in these schools?
School Rank- Does being in the top 1000 count for anything? haha. But many IB diploma kids in our school end up going to to top 10 colleges each year.

Senior Classes- All IB classes plus TOK.

SAT scores-2210
SAT II- Physics and Math. Taking them this saturday (probably both over 700. Maybe physics might be high 600s....)

E.C. (
4 year varsity cross country. Lettered all four years and went to state junior year and projected to go this year as well. Captain senior year. Most improved and Most inspirational award. (I wish I could be recruited for college but I'm not up to college times level as of right now)
3 years golf. Sophmore year jv and junior and senior varsity. Might be team captain senior year but do not know
200+ hours of community service (Library, Soup kitchen, math tutor)
ASB treasurer freshman year
I work for my parents' store nearly 20 hours a week because of economic situation (They can't afford to get more than one employee. One of the reasons my gpa is kinda low
Bunch of clubs( Key Club, MUN, etc...) nothing special
National Honor Society
1st degree Black Belt
Piano for 7 years

Recommendation-
I guess they are good, but not excellent. I wasn't a student that was the best in the classes, but I definetely contributed to the class.

Essays-
I hope it's pretty good, because Im spending my entire november and december writing and revising.

Chance me?? I will chance back!

The 3.55 GPA usually makes Michigan a reach. The IB diploma program may make it less of a reach but most admits to Michigan are 3.7 students or better. The SAT scores are good. A higher score probably would not make a difference. SAT II scores are not evaluated.

The bigger issue is that the Early Action deadline is today and if you keep writing and revising your essays you will be put in the Regular Decision pool which is often said to be less advantageous.

Thanks! Ya, I’m not doing early action unfortunately because I have not completely finished my essay.
Any comments for USC anyone??

Michigan is known for looking at ACTs and GPAs alone really, they kind of ignore everything else. The year before last, they used to readjust everyone’s GPAs, but they don’t do that anymore~ thus your GPA can really hurt you know at Michigan
But it’s really not that low that Michigan won’t accept you for that,
it’s good that you’re out of state b/c Michigan has only instate students rly (they need more oos diversity)
and you have IB courses under your belt (most Michigan students probly don’t know what that is as Michigan schools are too cash-strippen to offer it)
and you have pretty good extra cirriculars

so good luck =]

You should have a decent shot at USC, but I’m going to be pretty blunt that your chances for UMich are pretty slim, because of the reasons mentioned above by zinthafan. UMich is really hard to get into for anyone out-of-state, and only really top students get in usually.

Taking IB Diploma will help with USC, but I think there is something you should keep in mind. USC is a very very expensive school, and I would be worried about paying the tuition. If your parents have trouble hiring an employee for the store, then I’d have to say that you probably will need to apply for Financial Aid, which MIGHT hurt your chances. Just giving you a heads up on that.

^ GamBino, University of Southn California is need-blind in admissions and guarantees to meet 100% of USC-determined need using the CSS/Profile for all admitted students. Allpying for financial aid will not hurt anyone’s chances at USC.

Thanks! I always thought U mich was easier to get into than USC. I guess not…
