I'm a senior and I usually get college-related mail from various places. Most notably, Caltech and USC sent me some stuff, and just yesterday USC sent me a pamphlet with an application form and envelope attached.

I know that a bunch of people get a bunch of mail from all around, but does it mean anything? Does it mean your chances are most likely a little bit higher than the average person, or is it just pointless advertising?

Nope. It’s really just pointless advertising. If you get specific stuff, like from one college I got a letter saying “Apply by this date x and you will receive an answer by this date x.” That is because they have a list of schools that they’re going to accept if they apply.

It’s definitely just advertising. I got an application form from Harvard, and I know I don’t have a fighting chance of getting in xD Colleges probably send stuff like this based on SAT or PSAT scores.
