USC BCA

Hi! I'm an incoming sophomore and I know that my career path will have something to do with the film industry. I love movies and screenwriting, and recently the Business and Cinematic Arts program at USC has piqued my interest. However, I do understand that it's extremely tough to get in to this program. BCA students of CC, what did you guys do in high school to get into this awesome program? Also, what types of jobs do you end up with after BCA? Thanks!

I’m happy to answer any questions as best I can, my son is in the BCA program (rising senior). Are you an incoming high school sophomore? The reason I ask is because the BCA program is only open to incoming USC freshmen.

First you need to be accepted to USC and the Marshall School. After being accepted you will have a very short turn-around time to complete the supplementary application for BCA. Many more than 50 apply for the program and it is quite competitive. The only hard data point I have is that he has a friend at SC who applied with a 3.75UW/30 ACT who was accepted to Marshall but didn’t not get accepted to the BCA program.

I think one big factor in acceptance to BCA is showing both an interest and experience in entertainment as part of your high school extra-curricular activities. My son was a ‘competitive’ musician all through high school. His supplemental BCA essays talked a great deal about that experience and how it got him interested in the business side of entertainment.

Even if you don’t get into the program you can take many of the same classes as the BCAs. The downside would be that there are some events and mentoring counseling that is specific to the cohort. SC is very aggressive in helping students make connections with alumni in the industry. The type of job you get is really based on your interests and how aggressively you networked during your time at SC.

Sorry I didn’t specify that I’m in high school. Thanks for all the info!
