I have experience in acting but it isn’t extensive. I did 4 plays in high school however only one was more than a minor part. It was because I moved high schools three times so I never got into an acting program. I am also 21. So not freshman age. It doesn’t bother me.
I am currently at usc undeclared and I would like to audition for the bfa program. I really want the bfa experience because I was never able to have the theater family experience. If I do not get accepted into the program I have two options.
Should I do usc ba in acting program? Or
Should I follow my dream and find a bfa program that will accept me?
I highly recommend going to speak to the School of Dramatic Arts counselors before the semester ends. BA acting program is awesome and gives some flexibility in being able to take classes that a BFA would not be able to fit in. Counselors can also address the units that you have already taken at USC. It could be that IF you get accepted into the BFA program you will need to attend 4 more years. With your units perhaps you would have some GE units completed and only have 3 more years with a BA. They can help you with that and tell you what to expect for the audition. Good luck
As a side note: There are plays and musicals each semester that any major can audition for. Notices are posted in Dramatic Arts office bulletin board.
I am planning to speak to a counselor. I was just hoping to get more insight. I know I want to be on the showcase. And the only flexibility I want is to be able to better my craft. I have a skill set developed out side of acting so im not looking to minor.
BFAs take 4 years. Since you are 21, that means you wouldn’t graduate until age 25 at least. Age is a commodity in acting professionally, so you want to think hard about what all that extra time and at least $65K more will get you. Maybe a showcase? BAs get a shot at that too, although not guaranteed. If you are closer to graduating (like only 2 years away), have you thought about getting your BA and then auditioning for an MFA? What is your ultimate goal? Because BA Theatre students can get agents while in college and get started on professional auditions and work. BFAs cannot. There are many roads to an acting career. None is guaranteed. The short answer is–talk to an advisor in the SDA to learn all your options.
