Hi ellebud,

Thank you for the note about SMC. You are the first person that has responded to me about them. I am so happy to hear about spring admits for the BA and I thought I should try for that with a minor in musical in theatre. I will asking my USC counselor all about it. If you have any more info about SMC, I would love to hear it. If you do will you pm me.

Whoops thought the first one didn’t go thru so sent another message. Sorry.

Is it possible to be involved in the theater program as a minor rather than a major? My daughter was accepted as a “non-declared” major because she doesn’t want to major in theater but wants to be very active and try out for shows. Is this even possible or do you need to be in the theater school to even take classes or be involved? Just wondering. THANKS. When you talk about BA vs BFA do you mean both majoring in theater?

Gr8 question^^

rosieoney and mikey,

Babar’s son is at USC so perhaps she could answer your question. Send her a PM in case she doesn’t see this discussion.

USC does offer theatre minors, as well as courses to non-majors (and non-minors). Go to the USC website under academics, go to the School of Theatre and their academics tab, and you can get to a good brochure on their minor programs. They have minors in General Theatre, Playwriting, Performing Arts, Applied Theatre Arts, Dance, and Musical Theatre (through the Thornton School of Music). Many of the performances are limited to Theatre majors, but the musical is open, as well as performances through production/performance classes (I believe). There are also a wide range and number of productions at the school that are not “sponsored” by the theatre department that are open to all – including student run productions on stage and for film.

oh, how hard is it to get into UCS & UCLA?? How many gets accepted into their program? Do grades count more than the audition?? Is there Theatre dept. really good? THANKS A BUNCH!

I can’t speak to UCLA, but USC is selective both to get into theatre program and to the school. The theatre school aims for a class of about 20 BFAs and 80 BAs each year (I am told). My assumption is that the BFA selection is more based upon audition, but that BAs do have to get through the academic admission in addition to being accepted by the theatre school.

I will try to answer questions to the best of my ability. I don’t know, but would think, that there are BA Theatre admits in spring. This is a question that someone in the department should answer. There are a few BFA transfers as some students drop out as well, but there are obviously fewer of these since it is a smaller program. These students have to blend in to a program with more department requirements, so it’s more complicated.

There appears to be one show per year that is set aside for the BFA sophomores and one for juniors. Other shows are wide open to BA students and even non-theatre majors. I know that BA students do get strong parts in shows. I heard on a tour that there was an instance where a non-theatre major got a lead part. There is also an opportunity to study in London as a junior for a semester which is available to BFAs and BAs; students in both groups can and do participate.

I hope this is helpful. Actingmom’s D has had a roommate in the BA program so she might be even more helpful! And as for the selection process, we were told that the BFA students are selected 80% based on audition and 20% on academic credentials with the BA students selected 80% based on academic credentials and 20% based on audition. That’s what I remember but it’s been a few years now!

From what I was told at the USC Admitted Students Reception, School of Theatre shows are reserved for BFAs, BAs and minors, but the annual SOT musical is open to anyone. There are also TONS of student productions all year long.
