USC - cellphones.

This is mainly directed at current students (but if others have valid information, your input is encouraged):

I am curious what cellphone carrier that you use, and how you would rate the quality and coverage (can you get a signal anywhere/everywhere on campus).?

I attended Explore USC, and my cellphone did NOT work, except in a few locations. I heard comments from other parents who had the same experience. I am not trying to promote (or not promote) any particular carrier. If my son attends USC, we would like to know that we can reach him, (or he can reach us, and others), preferrably anywhere on campus. At the Explore USC, the woman in charge of Security indicated that the school just changed over to Cingular (so I am assuming that it must have good service and coverage). She indicated that they formerly had a contract with Verizon (again, i assume that it must have been decent, or else they would not have used it).

What do you use, and how good is the coverage?

thanks.

great question - i am also interested as my plan will be up and i know that where i live, only a few carriers are able to actually get service

My Verizon phone worked fine when we were at Explore USC.

We use Sprint. Works fine especially outside.

Verizon was pretty bad at spots at the beginning of the year, but they must have changed something over winter break because it is much better now.

I have t-mobile and it works excellent indoors and out when i was on campus.

I think all of the carriers have spots on campus that don't work. Can't say much about other carriers, but I found that Cingular works well everywhere except in the 2nd and 3rd stories of the Bookstore, and the basement of WPH. I believe Verizon has similar trouble spots, but at least in all the dorms, all the carriers get a strong signal.

DO NOT get verizon, its terrible around campus ... sometimes when i am standing next to Tommy Trojan or in the middle of the quad i have 1 bar ... anything else is good, most of my friends have cingular

I know verizon is the worst on campus. I have T-Mobile and it works great everywhere. Some of my friends have no problems with Cingular.

cingular, and I usually get full reception everywhere on campus except the deepest darkest corners of the basement (sometimes it works even then)

i use T-Mobile and its good:

Consumer Reports states around LA area...its
Verizon, Sprint or T-Mobile and Cingular at the bottom
<a href="http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/electronics-computers/how-the-four-major-cellphone-service-carriers-stack-up-106.htm?resultPageIndex=1&resultIndex=2&searchTerm=cell%20phone%20coverage%5B/url%5D">http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/electronics-computers/how-the-four-major-cellphone-service-carriers-stack-up-106.htm?resultPageIndex=1&resultIndex=2&searchTerm=cell%20phone%20coverage</a></p>

since you'll be using it more than around campus...i'd go w/the three above

But doesn't Verizon work even if you only have one bar? My phone works fine even when I have no bars...

I wouldn't recommend Verizon (what I have). I never used to get service at the center of campus (Tommy Trojan area). I haven't tried to use my phone over there in a long time, so I don't know how it is now; it might have changed. Most people say Cingular and T-Mobile have the best service on campus.

****. I just got Verizon Wireless like a month ago. Great. I'm going to be stuck with it for 2 years...

hah, same with me, i just renewed my plan. ugh.

same here, looks like I'll be stuck with verizon. :(

I really need a new phone though!

I have Verizon, and I never had a problem during Explore USC.

Around Tommy Trojan and Commons Verizon has little to no reception, but other than that, it's generally good.

Cingular is by far the best. You get reception even in the basement of the library with Cingular.

Verizon used to be terrible along Trousdale (right at the center of campus), but over Winter Break or something they changed it and now it is near perfect anywhere except the basement of the Library.

Sprint is pretty good, but it's still rough in spots.

I have Sprint and my phone works great. I get reception in my dorm and pretty much every place on campus, except for elevators; I've never tried the basement of the library.
