USC chances for this person I know

There is this student in my school that desperately wants to attend USC. He even spent a week w/some of his relatives in Cali as a vacation. The past few dress down days at my school, he has been worn some sort of USC piece of clothing, wthether it be a t-shirt, sweatshirt, or pants.

He is a very talented Math student who will probably major in Math, Computers, or something involiving them. What will hurt him is is low CR score as you will see.

SAT scores: 730 on the Math, but only a 530 on the Verbal. I think he got in the low 600s on the Writing.

Class Rank: 18/278 (~ top 7%) He obviously excells the most in Math/science/computer classes, but despite his low scores, does alright in English and the humanities.

His SAT II scores:

Math IC = 750
Math IIC = 710
Physics = 700

He got a 5 on the AP computer science exam, but 2s on US History and Euro History.

His extracurriculars are pretty good. He teaches kids religion at his local parish throgh my school's TCM (teaching the Christian message) program. He is also on the varsity swim team and runs track. He does some other stuff that I'm not sure about. Overall though, his EC's are pretty soild.

If I had to asses his chances, I'd say USC is a reach. His overall SAT is ~1900, but his low CR score hurts him. What helps him, I think, is that he is strong in his intended major, which will be Math or Computer related.

What do you think his chances are at USC?

If that doesn't work out for him, these are a few of his other schools:

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
Quinnipiac
SUNY Binghamton

What are his chances at these schools as well?

I know someone who got into UPenn with a 1250/1600 SAT score. There's still hope. He looks pretty solid otherwise. I'd say slight reach.

I'd agree that USC is a reach.

first of all,why are you asking for him

unless your actually him. which would be funny

USC would be a reach because is scores are very low. To be sure about attending USC, i'd say the SAT score needs to be above 2200

I am asking out of my own curiosity. We're similar students rank wise. He's #18 and I'm #21, so we often ask each other about our grades and scores. That's how I know a lot of his stats. He is also SO obsessed w/USC so I almost had to ask his chances of getting in. Today was a dress down day and was the first one in awhile in which he didn't wear some sort of clothing with USC on it.

I can assure you, these are not my stats. I am not even applying to USC or any school outside of NY. I don't want to dorm.

"To be sure about attending USC, i'd say the SAT score needs to be above 2200"

I don't agree with this. You don't need a 2200+ score to get into USC. Sure it would help, but it is certainly not needed. This students' scores are low by USC standards, especially the CR. However, he wants to do a math or computer related major, so will his high Math SAT scores and 5 on the AP Computer Science exam be considered more than his lower CR and Writing scores?

You do not need a 2200 to get into USC lol. The middle 50% is around 2100 I believe.

^^ agreed.

If he raised his SAT score, he'd stand a pretty good chance, I think. (Probably a match if it were higher.)

I think that even if he got in, he would struggle with USC's required freshman writing course. I got a 740 Verbal/Writing and it was still quite a challenge for me.

SAT Reasoning Verbal: 620 - 710
SAT Reasoning Math: 650 - 730

That's an average of 1370/1600 for USC. Statistics from Collegeboard, btw.
