USC Class of 2017 Applicants!

Thanks Wassupman99, great post, very clear. Appreciate the detail you provided. Just one more question, can you get accepted at this time but with a smaller merit scholarship or is that not being awarded till April timeframe? Say 5 or 10k or $500 whatever type smaller amounts, not these named scholarships. Is this time only for the big ones or all merit?

SOME applicants who will receive the Dean’s scholarship (1/4 tuition) will be notified at the end of Jan/beginning of Feb, while others will be notified in April. You will be notified of the other smaller scholarships, some of which you had to apply for separately, when the acceptance comes out in April.

Does anyone have “Explore USC” on their USConnect?

I wonder if that will be the hint this year for scholarships like it was last year!

I thought the “explore usc” tab comes up a while after your acceptance?

And if you’re living in Europe, like me, do y’all think it would take longer for me to get the packet? That is, if I do qualify for the scholarships
really hoping for something, as USC is not the most affordable choice

To people asking questions:

-only name scholarships (Mork, Trustee, Presidential, and some Dean’s) will be awarded at this time
-everyone who applies by Dec. 1 receives some sort of notification
-no one is rejected at this point, only accepted if you’re invited to interview for a scholarship
-you can still receive a small scholarship in April (see USC’s website for full list of scholarships and dates)
-nobody really knows what’s going on with USConnect hahaha. Mine still says the same thing as it did since the beginning.
-far away people will most likely have to wait a little bit longer, although some people in Asia last year did get a big DHL packet earlier than everyone else
but if USC is sending out everyone’s stuff together this year, you’ll probably have to wait! :(

Hey, I’m new to this site and I don’t really know how to navigate it, but I saw this thread and since I did apply for the USC class of 2017, I thought I could post my questions here. By the way this site is really very helpful due to all of your comments!

1) Does being a Full IB Diploma Candidate matter to USC? Does it really give you any advantage at all?

2) If you fail all of your IB tests, which I plan on doing (not on purpose of course, but realistically), will they take back any offers they made to you (scholarships, admittance, etc.) if they made any such offers?

3) Is an ACT score of 27 really just a lost cause for USC?

Hey eewwoo!

 1. Being doing full IBDP itself probably won’t help you, but the fact that you took so many IB courses and challenged yourself will. Hopefully you did well in those courses, and if not, at least you tried. It’s a really rigorous program so props for doing it!

2) Unless you’re applying to international colleges or the college specifically says they want your IB scores, they won’t rescind you for low test scores. You’re just losing out on a chance to get credit for your HL exams.

3) It’s never all about your ACT scores. It certainly doesn’t help you, but you’re not necessarily a lost cause.

I hope stanfordboundkid’s post is true! I literally just woke up after a night of dreaming of getting the mail at least 20 different times, haha. Hopefully someone near LA will find out today! I’ll be waiting for awhile here in Florida.

Oh my goodness. I’m too anxious now

I live in LA so I’ll post if I got anything.

^^ Great, Seabasstian. In the past two years, it has been either international students who receive a DHL email regarding a coming package or Southern CA students living in LA (or close enough) who first report to CC about acceptances. USC Connect hasn’t changed until a couple of days after people received packages.

Northern CA usually receives stuff about a day after So Cal. Again, there are weird things that happen every year too. When D got her package, a friend got her package almost a week later (USPS).

Since I live in So Cal, Ill post too if I get something. Ill keep you guys updated.

What really worries me is that I’m not even eligible to be considered. My SAT is 1870 but my cumulative unweighted GPA is a 3.9. So I’m really nervous.

Hey guys. I am a National Merit Semifinalist, and pretty sure I will be named a finalist, although they haven’t notified my school yet (my score was well above the cutoff for TX and I satisfied all the requirements laid out by NMSF to become a finalist). I applied by the Dec 1st deadline.

I was wondering though, because I am automatically given the Presidential NMF Scholarship (w/o need for an interview), will I hear if I’m admitted in the next few days? And if I am supposed to hear, and they say I am not being considered for scholarships, that basically means I didn’t get in, right? (cue hyperventilation).

I am beyond scared. USC is a dream and I have worked so hard my whole life to reach a school like this, but I feel like I ruined my chances with a small typo in my essay
as a prospective English major. In my rush to hit submit and cut down the word count, I ended up making a “than” a “that”. Whoops. Anyway, any info regarding NMFs would be GREATLY appreciated!

no, thatblonde, to my understanding that is NOT what it will mean if you don’t receive an interview/early acceptance. Because if you are admitted and have put USC as your first choice, you will be automatically given the half tuition scholarship, you do NOT need to interview for it. So it is POSSIBLE that you will not hear by Feb 1 and will not be invited for an interview, but will still be accepted.

That is my understanding based on previous years.

thatblonde - my son was in your exact situation last year. He received notification that he was accepted in late Jan/early Feb, but he did not receive an invitation to interview. Once he was named a NMF, he was automatically given the half-tuition Presidential scholarship (along with an small additional scholarship). But don’t panic if you don’t hear immediately
I am not sure that all NMSFs get their acceptances before March.

I don’t have any info on the acceptance letters, but the Explore/ scholarship interview dates are coming up; here they are from USC’s website:

Scholarship Overnight Dates

Monday - Tuesday
February 25 - 26, 2013

Thursday - Friday
February 28 - March 1, 2013

Monday - Tuesday
March 4 - 5, 2013

Thursday - Friday
March 7 - 8, 2013

Monday - Tuesday
March 11 - 12, 2013

thatblonde- I asked my interviewer about it and he said that NMFs don’t necessarily receive an acceptance in Jan/Feb even if they apply by Dec. 1, but they could be accepted in April.

Ah guys I’m so nervous about the scholarship letters. Does anybody know what kind of academic criteria (I know it must vary depending on the applicant, but I mean ball park range) the admissions office looks for when giving students merit scholarships? I’ve got a cumulative 4.5 GPA (on a 5.0 scale), sats 2230, math II subject test 680, us history subject test 780, I earned 5’s on the two ap tests that I took last year, and I take 5 ap classes this year. I know that obviously my eligibility for merit money depends on a number of factors
But does anyone know if I’m “there” academically?? I’m just not sure what USC considers for these scholarships.

Thank you jazz/shreddermom, Mommatron, and Businessco17! That should save me some devestation if I don’t get a letter soon! Although, I am hoping like none other that I do - the wait is killing me.
